French Delivers Walk-Off Homer as Cougars Rally Past Midway in Series Opener

KOKOMO, Ind. - The IU Kokomo baseball team managed just one hit through eight innings and trailed Midway for most of the series opener, but a pair of ninth-inning baserunners set the stage for Max French's three-run, opposite-field walk-off home run to secure the win.

THE RUNDOWN
  • After a scoreless first, Midway jumped ahead in the top of the second, scoring two runs as the inning's first two batters each doubled.
  • The Cougars got on the board in the bottom of the fifth. Max French reached base on a hit-by-pitch with one out, and his pinch runner, Caden Whitehead, moved to second after Peyton Lear was also hit. Both runners advanced another 90 feet on a passed ball. With one out, Luke Hanson delivered a productive RBI groundout to cut the deficit in half.
  • The Eagles responded right away in the top of the sixth, reclaiming a 3-1 lead on two hits and an IU Kokomo error.
  • IU Kokomo managed just one hit through the first eight innings and entered the ninth needing two to tie.
  • The Cougars delivered in the final frame, as Payton Hankins singled to right field and Jedvier Garcia drew a walk, setting the stage for Max French. French connected on the second pitch he saw, sending an opposite-field blast over the right-field fence to give IU Kokomo a 4-3 walk-off victory in the series opener.
