Baseball Goes 3-1 at 2024 Midwest Clash; Leverenz Becomes First Cougar to Hit for Cycle

MILLINGTON, Tenn. - The IU Kokomo baseball team enjoyed a successful weekend in Tennessee, heading home with three wins in four seven-inning games against non-conference foes.

Game 1: 10-1 Win vs IU South Bend
  • The Cougars struck first with three in the first, as Alex Janke singled and scored on a Tucker Platt triple. Platt would score on a Dylan Steele RBI-groundout, while Mike Talesky was hit by pitch and scored on a Jack Leverenz single.
  • Blake Kimball singled and stole second before scoring on an Alex Janke sac-fly in the second, giving the Cougs a 4-0 lead.
  • Talesky reached on a fielder's choice in the third before scoring on a Jack Leverenz triple.
  • IU South Bend pushed across their lone run of the game in the fourth on a pair of hits, cutting the deficit to 5-1.
  • Riley Garczynski doubled and came across to score on a Titan error, extending the IUK lead back to five at 6-1.
  • Already having singled and tripled in the game, Jack Leverenz came through with a three-run homer in the fifth, making it a 9-1 IU Kokomo lead through five innings.
  • After a Talesky two-out double gave Leverenz a chance to hit for the cycle, Jack completed the feat with a two-bagger to make it 10-1 Cougs. Leverenz is the first in program history to hit for the cycle.
  • Ben Harris got the start on the bump, tossing a complete game while allowing one earned run on four hits and two walks while striking out six. Harris is now 1-2 on the year.

Game 2: 2-1 Win @ St. Xavier (Ill.)
  • St. Xavier got on the scoreboard first, pushing a single run across in the bottom of the second for a 1-0 lead through two innings.
  • The Cougars of IU Kokomo were kept off the scoreboard until the fifth, when Mike Talesky singled to open the inning before stealing second, advancing to third on a groundout, and scoring on a Jarod Gillespie sac-fly. The game was tied 1-1 through four and a half.
  • Tahj Borom led off the sixth for IUK with a walk. Tahj advanced to second on an error, advanced another 90 feet on a passed ball, and scored an unearned run on another St. Xavier error to give the Cougs a 2-1 lead that they would close out for a third-consecutive win.
  • Justin Bultemeier got the nod for IUK in game two of the weekend, tossing a complete game while allowing one earned run on five hits while striking out four. With the win, Bultemeier is now 1-1 on the year.

Game 3: 9-3 Win @ Rochester (Mich.)
  • The score was even at 0-0 through two innings before the Cougars hung a four-spot in the top of the third on three hits and three Rochester errors to lead 4-0.
  • IU Kokomo added another four in the fourth to lead 8-0. Garczynski walked before Kasey Ross reached via error. Platt followed with a double, scoring Garczynski. With two away, Talesky came through a three-run jack to give the Cougs a commanding 8-0 lead.
  • The Cougars added their final run of the game in the fifth as Thomas Obergfell was hit by pitch and eventually came around to score on a Ross RBI-single to left.
  • Rochester scored their first run of the game in the sixth to trail 9-1 heading into the final frame.
  • The Warriors would push two more runs across in the seventh, but IU Kokomo would close out a 9-3 victory.
  • Mason Whiteley got the start for IU Kokomo in game one Sunday, tossing six innings and allowing an unearned run on four hits while striking out six. With the win, Whiteley is now 1-1 on the year.

Game 4: 15-5 Loss vs Northwestern Ohio (UNOH)
  • Having used just four arms through 21 innings to open the weekend, the Cougars would use seven in the final game of the weekend.
  • IU Kokomo scored first with a pair of runs in the bottom of the first for an early 2-0 lead.
  • UNOH responded immediately with two in the second, tying the game at 2-2.
  • Both sides were held scoreless in the third, but the Racers broke out for five in the fourth to lead 7-2.
  • The Cougars would chip away at the deficit with a pair in the bottom of the inning, as both Garczynski and Dylan Janke recorded RBI-doubles.
  • Both teams managed to score a single run in the fifth to make it 8-5 UNOH through five complete.
  • The Racers would break the game open in the sixth with seven runs on two hits and an error to lead 15-5, the score in which they would go on to win by.
  • Logan Greer got the ball for IUK, and despite dealing early, he was forced out of the game due to injury after facing just four batters.
  • Six other Cougar arms combined to finish the game.

The Cougars will host St. Francis (Ind.) for a four-game set this weekend at Kokomo Municipal Stadium.
