Box Score 2 KOKOMO, Ind. - The IU Kokomo baseball team dropped game one Sunday to Madonna 10-4 before bouncing back to win the final game of the weekend 7-5 over Saint Francis (Ind.). Through four weekends and heading into RSC play, the Cougars are .500 at 7-7.
Game One Offensively
- Madonna scored three runs in the top of the first and followed that with five runs in the top of the second to lead 8-0 through two innings.
- The Crusaders scored a single run in the third before being kept off the scoreboard until the seventh.
- IU Kokomo scored three runs in the fifth to cut into the lead. Landon Riekhof was HBP and Blake Kimball followed with a single before Jack Leverenz reached via fielder's choice. Caden Whitehead came through with a two-run double to score Riekhof and Leverenz. Whitehead would score on a ground-ball off the bat of Cade Combs that resulted in an E6.
- Both teams scored a single run in the final frame. IUK's run came via a Matt Iacobucci single that scored Gavin Smith. The Cougars dropped game one to Madonna 10-4.
Game One Pitching
- JT Holton took the loss, lasting an inning and a third and allowing eight runs on five hits. Holton walked two and struck out three.
- Owen Harvey turned in a solid relief outing, tossing 2.2 innings and allowing one earned run on two hits and two walks while striking out three.
- Mark Goudy, Brandon Clarke, and Dylan Steele each threw an inning to close out the game.
Game Two Offensively
- IU Kokomo found the scoreboard first, putting up five runs on three hits and one USF error in the bottom of the third. Caden Whitehead singled to lead off the inning and Tahj Borom was HBP. Riley Garczynski tripled down the right-field line to score two. An E9 on a routine fly ball scored both Garczynski and Platt, and Dylan Steele would score on a Leverenz RBI single.
- The Cougs added on in the fourth as Jonathan Latham and Riley Garczynski both singled and scored on a Jarod Gillespie double to left. IUK led 7-0 through four innings.
- Saint Francis scored a single run in the sixth, and trailed 7-1 through six innings.
- USF gave IUK a bit of a scare in the seventh, scoring four runs on five hits, but IU Kokomo held on for a 7-5 win to close out the weekend.
Game Two Pitching
- Mason Whiteley got the start and earned the win to improve to 1-1 on the year. Whiteley allowed one earned run on four hits and two walks while striking out five in five innings of work.
- Victor Fujiu came in with two on and no outs in the sixth and got the Cougs out of a jam, striking out two and inducing a groundout. Fujiu would give up four runs in the seventh on two hits and two walks while striking out three in 1.2 innings of relief.
- Brandon Bultemeier came in for the final out to earn the save, allowing a hit before striking out a man to end the game.
Next up, the Cougars will open up River States Conference play next weekend with a three-game series at Oakland City.
