Baseball Drops Opener at Shawnee State

PORTSMOUTH, Ohio. - Despite an early start from the offense, the IU Kokomo Baseball team dropped the series opener on the road against Shawnee State Friday. 

The second game of the planned double header was suspended due to darkness with the game tied at 11. The game will resume tomorrow morning at 10:00 AM EST at the beginning of the 10th inning.

THE RUNDOWN
  • The Cougar offense started early in this one, as Jedvier Garcia walked and Noah Wolf singled to put two men on. A couple batters later, with two outs, Payton Hankins smacked a double to the left center gap, scoring both Wolf and Garcia. Rodney Rachel followed him with an RBI triple, and would come in on a wild pitch, giving the Cougars a 4-0 lead after half an inning. 
  • Shawnee would respond immediately, as they plated three in the home half of the first. Both teams went silent in the second, before Shawnee exploded in the third, as they put up a six spot, giving them a 9-4 lead. 
  • IU Kokomo would scratch a couple back in the fifth. Jedvier Garcia led off with a walk, and was followed by a Noah Wolf double. Garcia and Wolf would both come in to score a batter later as Riley Sands reached on an error from the shortstop, cutting the Shawnee lead to three. 
  • Shawnee would match with a pair of their own runs in the bottom half of the inning, extending their lead to 11-6. The Cougar offense would get another in the top of the sixth as Luke Hanson led off with a double, and would come around to score on a passed ball a couple batters later. 
  • From there, the Cougar offense would go scoreless as the Bears would add four runs in the sixth and another in the eighth, giving them the 16-7 win.
