NEW ALBANY, Ind. - The IU Kokomo Women's Basketball team feel to the IU Southeast Grenadiers by a score of 70-67 on Saturday.
After an early 6-0 lead for IU Southeast, a layup and a free throw by
Anna Kiser cut the lead to three. However, the Cougars struggled to keep up with the Grenadiers offensively throughout the rest of the period, falling to a 21-12 deficit by the end of the first quarter.
Three more points from
Anna Kiser and a three-pointer from
Anya Friend brought IUK within 8 early in the second quarter, but the defensive struggles lingered for the Cougars, as they would trail 33-20 by the midway point of the quarter.
The Cougars found an offensive surge in the final moments of the half, as a trio of three-pointers from
Kristen Ridner,
Anya Friend, and
Olivia Dowden coupled with an
Alaya Chapman layup brought them within 2 points, taking a 37-39 deficit into halftime.
IU Kokomo would find their first lead of the game early in the third quarter after a
Mia Catey three-pointer gave them a 43-41 lead. The Grenadiers then stormed back to a 49-46 lead, to which
Anya Friend answered with another three-point shot to tie the game at 49. By the end of the third quarter, IUK trailed 56-57.
A low scoring fourth quarter saw multiple lead changes. After the Cougars trailed by three with just over a minute left in the game,
Ella Wolfe made a layup to cut the lead to one. The Grenadiers quickly responded with their own layup with 57 seconds on the clock, and IUK would fail to score again, falling to IU Southeast by a score of 70-67.
Alaya Chapman was the offensive leader for the Cougars with 13 points.
Anya Friend and
Kristen Ridner also scored 11 points each.
Next week, the Cougars travel to Oakland City University on Tuesday, before closing their season on Saturday at home against Brescia University.
