UPLAND, Ind. - The IU Kokomo women's basketball team traveled to Taylor University Tuesday for the first of two games on consecutive days. The Cougars fell to Cumberland University (Tenn.) 66-51 this evening and will return to Upland Wednesday to take on the host Trojans.
The Phoenix of Cumberland University scored the first six points of the game and found themselves in front 13-4 by the midway point of the first quarter. A jumper from
Alaya Chapman in the paint made it a five-point deficit for the Cougars after one quarter.
An old-fashioned three-point play from sophomore guard
Kelsi Langley trimmed the Phoenix lead to two early in the second quarter. IU Kokomo trailed for the remainder of the quarter but kept CU within striking distance, trailing 36-29 at halftime.
The Cougars once again found themselves trailing by just two early in the third quarter, before a triple from Langley gave IUK their first lead of the game at 41-40. The Phoneix would soon regain the lead however, and led 52-48 through 30 minutes.Â
Coming off of a strong third quarter, the Cougars struggled mightily in the final ten minutes, as they were outscored 14-3 in a low-scoring fourth quarter. After taking a four-point lead into the fourth, Cumberland closed out a 66-51Â win over IU Kokomo.
Anna Kiser led IU Kokomo with seven points and nine boards, while
Kelsi Langley recorded a team-high 10 points as the only Cougar to score in double-figures.
Shamaria Walker contributed nine points and four rebounds while
Alaya Chapman scored seven points off the bench.
The Cougars will return to action Wednesday at Taylor as they will take on the host Trojans in a 6:00 PM tip-off.
