PITTSBURGH, Pa. – The Indiana University Kokomo women's soccer team earned an ever important conference win Thursday in downtown Pittsburgh, knocking off the reigning RSC regular season champs on their home pitch. The Cougars scored a goal in each half on their way to a 2-0 road win.
Thursday's win against Point Park was IU Kokomo's first all-time in six meetings with the Pioneers.
Despite being out-shot 30-14 and 12-9 in shots on goal, the Cougars of IU Kokomo relied on those with experience. The Cougars two goals came from a pair of upperclassmen in
Kelsi Hoot &
Keely Hoopingarner, while
Kailee Moore, last year's RSC Newcomer of the Year, came through with a 12-save shutout in net.
IU Kokomo, led by third-year head coach
Sohaila Akhavein, came out ready to play, registering a pair of shots on goal within the opening five minutes.
Junior
Kelsi Hoot was a thorn in the Pioneers side for much of the first half, and she managed to beat the goalkeeper on her third shot on goal of the half. Hoot's third goal of the season came in the final minute of the first 45, giving the Cougars a 1-0 lead heading into halftime.
Point Park seemed to come out of the locker room with a purpose, as they scattered shots near the goal while maintaining possession early in the second half.
In the 65th minute, River States Conference goal-scoring leader
Keely Hoopingarner scored her ninth of the season to add an insurance goal for the Cougars with 25 minutes to play.
Behind the strong play of
Kailee Moore in goal, IU Kokomo was able to close out a 2-0 victory over Point Park.
The Cougars will stop in Circleville, Ohio, on the trip back home from Pennsylvania, as they are set to take on the Trailblazers of Ohio Christian Saturday at 1:00 PM.
