PITTSBURGH, Pa. – The Indiana University Kokomo women's basketball team cruised to a 60-41 victory over Carlow University Saturday afternoon, marking their fourth win in their last five games. The Cougars are now 7-10, and 4-6 in River States Conference action.
Carlow got on the board first and took an early 6-0 lead to force coach
John Kenger to take a timeout. IU Kokomo responded well out of the timeout, going on a 10-0 run and holding the Celtic offense scoreless for five and a half minutes. Four Cougars scored in the opening quarter and IUK led 12-9 after one.
The Cougars dominated play in the second quarter, outscoring Carlow 25-7, including a 15-1 run throughout the first 6:54 of the quarter. IU Kokomo forced 20 first-half turnovers and tallied 15 steals on their way to a 37-16 halftime lead.
Senior
Tia Chambers opened the scoring in the second half for the Cougars, extending the lead to 23-points at 39-16, their largest lead of the quarter. The third period was played evenly as the IUK lead never fell below 20. IU Kokomo held a comfortable 49-29 lead after three quarters.
Kristen Ridner scored the first three-points of the fourth for IUK, but Carlow showed resiliency and utilized an 8-0 run to cut the Cougar lead to 13-points halfway through the fourth. IU Kokomo went on to outscore Carlow 8-2 over the final 5:15 to earn a 60-41 road win.
Anya Friend and
Tia Chambers led IU Kokomo with 13 points apiece in the win while
Vanessa Mullins added nine points. Chambers pulled down a team-high eight rebounds and Friend had seven boards.
The Cougars will return home for a stretch of three home games in six days beginning with West Virginia Tech Thursday evening. Tipoff is set for 5:30 p.m. in the Student Activities and Events Center.
