Three in Double Figures as Women’s Basketball Cruises to 84-57 Win over West Virginia Tech

KOKOMO, Ind. – The Indiana University Kokomo women's basketball team notched their third consecutive victory with a dominant 84-57 win over West Virginia Tech Tuesday evening. The Cougars are now 8-10 and 5-6 in River States Conference play.

IU Kokomo's 84 points tonight marks their second-highest scoring output on the season behind an 87-point performance against IU Southeast. The Cougars shot 55% from the field and 42% from three-point range.

The Golden Bears led 5-4 early, but a Tia Chambers bucket sparked a 17-0 Cougar run to take a 21-5 first quarter lead. IU Kokomo shot 73.3% from the field in the opening period on their way to a 28-11 lead after one.

IUK opened the second quarter with a 5-0 spurt to grow the lead to 22, but West Virginia Tech was able to trim the lead to 13 with 2:03 remaining in the first half. The Cougars took a 45-30 lead into halftime.

Out of the break, a Brittney Justice trey cut the IUK lead to 12, but the Cougars responded and comfortably controlled play for the remainder of the game. A pair of free throws from Vanessa Mullins gave the Cougars their largest lead of the quarter at 23 points before the Golden Bears trimmed the IUK lead to 16. Sierra Peete answered with a bucket to give the Cougars a 64-46 lead after three quarters.

IU Kokomo led 70-52 with 7:14 remaining in the game but outscored West Virginia Tech 14-5 down the stretch to come away with a convincing 84-57 victory.

Anya Friend led the IUK offensive attack with 20 points on four of seven shooting from deep. Sierra Peete contributed 19 points, five rebounds and four steals while Tia Chambers added 16 points, a team-high seven boards, and four assists.

The Cougars will return to the court in less than 48 hours as they play host to the University of Rio Grande Saturday afternoon. Tipoff is scheduled for 3:00 p.m.
