KOKOMO, Ind. – The Indiana University Kokomo women's soccer team dropped its first River States Conference match of the season on Thursday night, falling to Ohio Valley University, 4-1 at Kokomo Municipal Stadium.
The Cougars netted an early goal, but the Fighting Scots scored four unanswered to pick up their first win of the season.
Morgan Scruggs wasted no time getting the Cougars on the board as the senior took a cross from
Keely Hoopingarner and buried it in the back of the net in the opening minute of the match to put IUK up 1-0.
Minutes later, the Fighting Scots cashed in on an IUK foul in their own zone, giving Ohio Valley their first free kick opportunity of the match. Raewyn Murphy swung a ball in from the near side of the field and kissed it off the crossbar and across the goal line for the equalizer.
In the 25th minute, the Fighting Scots scored the go-ahead goal as Sandra Linares took a cross from Ana Rodrigues and flipped it past IUK keeper,
Erica Bolinger to give Ohio Valley a 2-1 lead.
With less than eight minutes to play in the opening half, the Fighting Scots converted a corner kick into a goal as Marina Lima sent a ball into the box and Sandra Lineras' initial attempt was denied but Oihane Abascal cleaned up for her first goal of the season giving the Fighting Scots a 3-1 lead.
The Fighting Scots extended their lead to 4-1 with a goal in the 49th minute.
The Cougars took eight shots in the match, putting four of them on frame. Scruggs led IUK with four total shots and two on goal.
Next up, IUK will host West Virginia Tech on Saturday. Kickoff is set for 1:00 p.m.
