Golden Goal Lifts Women's Soccer Past WVU Tech

KOKOMO, Ind. – A golden goal in the seventh minute of the first overtime period from Kelsi Hoot was the difference on Saturday as the Indiana University Kokomo women's soccer team earned its first win of the season, a 2-1 victory over River States Conference foe, West Virginia Tech. The win was the first for first-year IUK head coach Sohaila Akhavein.

The Cougars outshot the Golden Bears, 10-6 in the victory.

Keely Hoopingarner put the Cougars on the board first in the 15th minute, as she took a flick from Mackenzie Gibbons and snuck behind the high-pressing WVU Tech defense for her second goal of the season, giving IUK a 1-0 lead. Gibbons and Hoopingarner each finished with three shots in the victory.

In the 73rd minute, the Golden Bears found the equalizer as Brittany Dye beat IUK keeper, Erica Bolinger for her fifth goal of the season.

The score would remain tie at one after 90 minutes of action, forcing overtime. This would be the Cougars' second overtime match of the season.

In the 96th minute, Hoot dribbled up the sideline, beating multiple WVU Tech defenders and fired a shot toward the net that froze the WVU Tech keeper. Hoot's first goal of the season came at an opportune time, giving the Cougars the 2-1 win.

The Cougars will be back in action on Saturday, September 25 as they host Oakland City University at Kokomo Municipal Stadium.
