KOKOMO, Ind. – After 12 matches on the road, the Indiana University Kokomo volleyball team played its first home match of the season on Tuesday night against River States Conference foe, Brescia University. The Cougars dominated from start to finish, beating the Bearcats, 3-0 in just over an hour.
The win moves the Cougars to 8-5 overall on the year and 1-0 in RSC play.
IU Kokomo came out on fire in the opening set, scoring five straight points forcing a Brescia timeout. The Cougars eventually built their lead to 12-1 and would continue to add to it. The Bearcats reached double figures at 19-10. With the score 21-12, the Cougars recorded four consecutive kills, three from
Jocelyn Hack and the set-winner from
Sidney Gerig to close out the Bearcats in the opening frame.
The second set was much of the same at the Cougars held the Bearcats to just six points enroute to a 25-6 victory to go up 2-0. IUK went the entire set without an attacking error, just as they did in the first.
The Bearcats started to come alive in the third set as they held a one-point lead on two occasions in the early going. The Cougars kept their foot on the gas and built a 10-4 advantage, but things got a little closer in the middle part of the set as the Bearcats got within two points at 15-13, forcing IUK to call a timeout.
The final Brescia kill of the match made it 23-20 in favor of the Cougars. A kill from
Tori Wilkinson and an error from the Bearcats ended the match, giving IUK a 3-0 win in their first conference match of the season. Wilkinson finished the night with four kills.
Morgan Weir and Hack led the Cougars with seven kills each and neither committing an error.
Kaley Lyons dished out a match-high 33 assists in the win while
Alyvia Smith led the way on defense with 12 digs.
River States action will continue this weekend for the Cougars as they travel to Midway on Friday and IU Southeast on Saturday.
