Cougar Soccer Falls to Governors State

KOKOMO, Ind. – The Indiana University Kokomo women's soccer team dropped a non-conference match against Governors State University on Saturday afternoon at Kokomo Municipal Stadium. The Cougars surrendered three goals to the Jaguars, falling 3-0.

IUK keeper Erica Bolinger was tested early as the Jaguars fired two shots on goal in the first nine minutes of the contest. Bolinger turned both shots away to keep the game scoreless.

In the 15th minute, senior Morgan Scruggs put a shot on frame but Governors State keeper Eden Suda made her first of three saves.

Governors State broke the scoreless tie in the 23rd minute when Avery Damjanovic beat Bolinger for her first goal of the season.

The Cougar attack put some pressure on the Jaguar defense in the closing minutes of the first half. IUK managed to get four corner kicks in the final 12 minutes of the half but could not find the equalizer before the break.

Two minutes into the second half, Mackenzie Pedigo fired a shot towards goal but missed high. Just minutes later, the Jaguars took advantage of a free kick opportunity just outside the 18-yard box. The initial strike found the crossbar but it was the rebound that found the back of the net to give GSU a 2-0 advantage.

IUK had two opportunities in the 59th minute as Gabriela Jaimes ripped a shot that missed wide and Scruggs put another on goal that was denied by Suda.

With just over five minutes to play in the match, Governors State added a third goal.

In the final minute, Keely Hoopingarner had what would be IUK's best scoring chance of the afternoon as the junior fired a rocket as Suda who made a spectacular save to keep her clean sheet intact.

The Cougars finished with six shots including three on frame. Scruggs accounted for two of the three in the loss.

Despite giving up three goals, Bolinger made seven saves.

The Cougars will play the final match of their three-game homestand next Friday as they welcome Lawrence Tech to Kokomo Municipal Stadium. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m.
