KOKOMO, Ind. – The Indiana University Kokomo men's basketball streak continued Saturday afternoon as the Cougars withstood a late comeback effort by the Midway University Eagles. The Cougars defeated the Eagles 78-68 to move to 10-2 overall on the year and 4-1 in River States Conference action.
The Eagles high-scoring offense is averaging nearly 87 points on the season and shooting 51 percent from the field. IU Kokomo's defense held the Eagles to just 38 percent from the field and 11 percent from beyond the arc.
IU Kokomo got off to a quick start against the Eagles, something they have not done much this season. Just eight minutes into the contest, the Cougars built an eight-point advantage when
Trequan Spivey scored a transition bucket on the long pass from
Desean Hampton. Minutes later, Hampton gave the Cougars their first double digit lead of the game, hitting a triple off the
Julien Hunter assist.
With 7:04 left to play in the half,
Hunter White gave IU Kokomo its largest lead of the half at 15 points. The Cougars would remain in control for the duration of the half. Spivey hit a jumper with just over a minute left to give IUK a 42-29 lead that would hold until the halftime horn.
Spivey led all scorers with 12 points at the break. Hampton pulled down seven rebounds in the opening frame.
IU Kokomo came out of the locker room and built their lead to 17 points after Hunter put back an
Allante Harper miss at the 14:45 mark. A pair of Midway free throws would cut the IUK lead to 15 and momentum began swinging in favor of the Eagles. Over the next five minutes the Eagles would go on a 17-3 run to cut their deficit to one point with just over nine minutes to play in the game.
The veteran led IU Kokomo squad weathered the storm and answered with a short 8-0 run to build their lead back to nine points. The Cougars would withstand one final push from Midway who cut the IUK lead to three points with 5:26 to play. The IU Kokomo defense held Midway to just seven points for the duration of the game while scoring 14 to close out their fifth straight victory.
Spivey finished with a game-high 19 points to go with seven assists while Hampton added 13 points and a game-high 14 rebounds.
Hunter White also chipped in with 13 points. The Cougars shot 52 percent from the field.
The Cougars' bench outscored the Eagles' bench 27-11 in the win.
