KOKOMO, Ind. – The Indiana University Kokomo men's basketball team overcame a slow start to win their sixth consecutive game on Tuesday night as the Cougars defeated Wilberforce University, 84-72 at the Student Activities and Events Center.
Four players scored in double figures for the Cougars led by
Trequan Spivey with 16. Spivey who was named last week's River States Conference player of the week is now averaging 16.8 points per contest, which is ninth best in the league.
Desean Hampton needed just 17 points coming into tonight's game to become the fifth player in IUK men's basketball history to reach 1,000 for his career. Hampton came up just two points shy, scoring 15 points to go along with his game-high 17 rebounds.
Other players in double figures included
Hunter White who scored a season-high 14 points and
Julien Hunter who also recorded his season-high with 10 points.
The Cougars' sluggish start put them behind 13-0 through the first four minutes of action. Hampton got IU Kokomo on the board with his first dunk of the game off the Spivey dish.
Trailing 22-9 with just over 12 minutes to play in the opening half, the Cougars went on a 15-2 run to even things at 24.
Hunter Jackson hit a pair of triples during the run.
A Wilberforce basket made it a 32-all with 4:48 remaining in the half, but a 14-6 run by the Cougars sent them into the locker room with a 46-38 lead over the Bulldogs.
IU Kokomo outscored the Bulldogs 46-25 after falling behind 13-0
At the 13:01 mark in the second half, the Cougars were awarded four free consecutive free throws. Two coming from
Noah Harris on a Wilberforce personal foul and two coming from Spivey after a technical was given to the Bulldog bench. The last free throw from Harris gave the Cougars a 13 point lead, their largest lead of the contest.
When it looked as if the Cougars were going to pull away, Wilberforce came clawing back, cutting the IUK lead to as little as four with 6:05 left to play. IU Kokomo was able to hold the Bulldogs off to earn their sixth consecutive victory.
The Cougars shot 56 percent from the field in the victory and out-rebounded the Bulldogs 43-29.
