Baseball Takes First Two Games at Midway Friday to Make it Five Straight Conference Victories

MIDWAY, Ky. - The Indiana University Kokomo Baseball team picked up Friday where they left off in last weekend's River States Conference series sweep of WVU Tech, sweeping the series opening doubleheader at Midway (Ky.) with 9-4 and 14-9 victories.

After starting conference play 1-7, the Cougars have now won five-consecutive River States Conference games to sit at 6-7 ahead of Saturday's series finale with the Eagles. IU Kokomo's offense was on fire Friday, as the Cougars recorded double-digit hits in each of Friday's contests.

Game One: 9-4 Win
  • IU Kokomo scored the first six runs of game one, striking in the first inning via Jacob Medvescek's seventh home run of the year, a two-run blast that scored Mason Janz (1B).
  • The Cougars added on in the second, scoring three runs on two hits and an error. Noah Wolf recorded an RBI single in the frame, while Alex Janke doubled to center, scoring a pair to make it a 5-0 IUK lead.
  • Medvescek's hot bat continued, as he doubled to lead off the third before scoring a batter later on a Kasey Ross RBI single up the middle, extending the lead to six thru three frames.
  • Midway got on the board in the home-half of the fourth inning, pushing a single run across to trail 6-1 nearly halfway thru the game.
  • After a scoreless fifth for both sides, IU Kokomo produced their seventh run of the game in the top of the sixth. Wolf walked ahead of Janke who singled to right, and after a Gavin Smith sac-bunt advanced both, Wolf scored on a Janz sac-fly.
  • The Eagles posted their first crooked number of the weekend in the eighth, scoring three runs on two hits to cut what was a six-run deficit in half at 7-4.
  • Interim Head Coach Jeremy Honaker's squad answered with a pair of insurance runs in the ninth, as Janz homered (3) while Kasey Ross and Payton Hankins doubled consecutively to re-build the lead to five and hand it over to the bullpen.

Pitching Notables:
  • Brett Huiner got the ball in game one once again Friday, tossing seven strong innings of one-run ball to earn the win and improve to 3-1 on the year. Huiner's final line: 7 IP, 4 H, 1 ER, 2 BB, 8 K.
  • Nathan Stanley relieved Huiner, surrendering three earned runs on two hits and a walk in his lone inning of work.
  • Senior RHP Ethan Leslie slammed the door shut on Midway in the bottom of the ninth, facing the minimum and striking out one.

Game Two: 14-9 Win
  • Game two proved to be a much higher-scoring affair, with the two teams combining for 22 hits and 23 runs with IU Kokomo scoring in all but one inning.
  • The Cougars never trailed in the game, jumping out to a commanding lead with a five-run first inning. While the Cougars won handily, the story of game two proved to be shortstop Gavin Smith hitting for the cycle.
  • Smith checked off arguably the hardest 1/4 of the cycle in the first, homering to score Janke (1B) and give the Cougs a 2-0 lead two batters in. An E6 later in the inning would score both Medvescek (BB) and Hankins (1B), before Wolf closed out the scoring with a RBI single that scored Brayden Coffey (HBP).
  • Just like game one, IU Kokomo would score three times before Midway scored once, as the Cougars added one in the second and three in the third for a 9-0 lead.
  • Smith doubled to lead off the second, advanced to third on a fly-out, scoring on a Medvescek RBI groundout.
  • Another E6 scored Hankins (1B) in the third before Janke singled and Smith tripled, each scoring a run. With the triple, Smith moved just a single away from the cycle with five innings remaining, considering it was game two of a DH and therefore a seven-inning contest.
  • Trailing by nine through two and a half, Midway pushed four runs across the plate on three hits in the third, cutting their deficit to five.
  • IU Kokomo added another in the fourth as Medvescek led off the frame with a double, advanced on a fly-out, and scored on wild pitch to make it a 10-4 Cougar lead.Ā
  • Believe it or not, the Cougars plated another in the fifth, with catcher Luke Hanson leading off the inning with a HBP. Hanson's courtesy runner Garrett Lupoi advanced to third on a Wolf single before scoring on a Janke sac-fly.
  • Later in the same frame, needing just a single to join the short-list of IU Kokomo baseball players to hit for the cycle, Logansport native Gavin Smith singled to centerfield to complete the significant individual accomplishment.
  • Honaker's high-powered offense hung yet another crooked number in the sixth, scoring three runs on three hits to extend the lead to double-digits. Medvescek doubled and scored on a Ross double, while Ross and Hankins (HBP) each eventually scored on a Hanson two-RBI single.
  • Trailing 14-4 and needing ten to force extras, the Eagles pushed five runs across in the home-half of the seventh, yetĀ the Cougars held on to complete the doubleheader sweep with a 14-9 game-two victory.

Pitching Notables:
  • Sophomore RHP Alec Murphy made the start on the bump for IU Kokomo, tossing four innings and giving up four earned runs on four hits and a pair of walks, striking out one. With the win, Murphy improves to 2-3.
  • AJ Burkhalter pitched the fifth and sixth for IU Kokomo in relief of Murphy, surrendering five runs on four hits and three free passes.
  • Jack Bruington entered in a jam in the seventh but pitched out of it well, facing the minimum while keeping a clean sheet as he closed out the win.
