Cougars Earn Sweep of Midway with 10-6 Win Saturday, Improve to .500 in River States Conference Play

MIDWAY, Ky. - The Indiana University Kokomo Baseball team has caught fire as of late, having swept two-consecutive River States Conference series while winning seven of their last eight games after Saturday's 10-6 victory at Midway (Ky.).

Having scored nine runs in the series opener before following that up with 14 in game two, the IU Kokomo bats produced 10 runs on eight hits in Saturday's series finale, benefiting from five Midway errors.

Senior RHP Mason Whiteley made the start on the mound for IU Kokomo, delivering a strong effort in six innings of work. Whiteley allowed three runs (one earned) on two hits and two free passes, striking out four. Whiteley would earn the win to improve to 3-2 on the season.

To no one's surprise, IU Kokomo struck first once again, this time with a pair of runs in the top of the first.

Lead-off man Alex Janke reached base via an E6 before stealing second and third, scoring on a Jacob Medvescek RBI double with two outs in the inning. Medvescek would then score on a Kasey Ross RBI single through the right side, giving the Cougs an early 2-0 lead.

After a scoreless second inning, the high-octane IU Kokomo offense added two more in the top of the third. Mason Janz reached via E6 to open the frame before stealing second and scoring on Ross's second RBI single of the afternoon. With two outs in the inning, Ross scored an unearned run via wild pitch to make it a four-run lead.

Midway managed to score three runs on just one hit in the home-half of the third, as two men reached ahead of Eli Glasscock, who homered to pull the Eagles within one at 4-3.

The Cougars got one of those three runs back immediately in the fourth, as Janke tripled to right center with two outs before scoring on a wild pitch, re-establishing a two-run, 5-3 lead.

Janke continued to see the ball well in the sixth, as he started off a three-run sixth with a one-out double. After he was thrown out on a play at the plate, both Gavin Smith and Mason Janz reached ahead of Jacob Medvescek, who launched his eighth home-run of the season to extend the lead back to five at 8-3.

Both sides pushed a single run across in their half of the inning, as Brayden Coffey and Anthony Nino doubled in consecutive AB's to account for the Cougars ninth run of the game.

Leading 9-4 after seven innings, the Cougars scored one final insurance run in the eighth. Janz and Medvescek both reached base safely, with Janz eventually scoring via a throwing error by the pitcher.

Trailing 10-4 and trying to avoid the sweep while down to their final six outs of the series, Midway would push a run across in both the eighth and ninth, as IU Kokomo closed out a 10-6 victory in the series finale to clinch another River States Conference series sweep for the Cougars.

Logan Greer was the first man out of the pen for IU Kokomo, tossing the seventh and surrendering one run on one hit. Koen Berry followed Greer in the eighth, surrendering a run on four hits before inducing a key ground-ball double play.

Veteran RHP Ethan Leslie entered to shut the door on the Eagles once again Saturday, this time allowing a run to score on one hit, striking out one as he clinched the victory.

The Cougars will return to action Tuesday afternoon for a mid-week matchup at Marian University in Indianapolis. First pitch is set for 3:00 PM ET.
