SAINT MARY-OF-THE-WOODS, Ind. - The IU Kokomo Women's Basketball team had their 2024-2025 season come to an end Saturday, falling on the road to Saint Mary-of-the-Woods in a match up that determined who earned a spot in this week's RSC Championship Quarterfinals.
The Cougars finished the year with an overall record of 10-17 and a River States Conference record of 6-10, having earned the program's most wins since the 2021-2022 campaign.
SMWC and IUK entered Saturday tied for fourth in the RSC West Division with identical conference records of 6-9. Both teams came into the game aware that while a win advanced them to the postseason, a loss meant the end of the season.
In her final collegiate game after five years as a Cougar,
Anna Kiser led IU Kokomo in scoring. Kiser, the lone Cougar to score in double-figures Saturday, finished with 17 points and six rebounds in 38 minutes of action. Kiser's loyalty and contributions to both the program and athletic department are un-matched.
The difference in the game proved to be the three-point line, as the Pomeroys made 11 triples, 10 more than the Cougars one. SMWC's Irye Gomez was responsible for seven of the 11 triples, finishing with 24 points.Â
Saint Mary-of-the-Woods hit three first-quarter treys on their way to a 15-8 lead, however IU Kokomo scored the final four points of the first quarter to trail by three through 10 minutes.
After a fairly even first quarter field goal percentage wise, the Pomeroys shot 40% from the field in the second period while holding the Cougars to a mark of 25% en-route to a 33-23 halftime lead.
The home team's first-half momentum carried over into the third, as SMWC outscored IUK 21-10 to lead 54-33 with just 10 minutes remaining.
IU Kokomo's level of play rose tremendously in the fourth quarter, but the deficit proved too large, as Saint Mary-of-the-Woods earned a 71-51 victory to advance to the RSC Quarterfinals Wednesday at Shawnee State.
Junior forward
Mia Catey had nine points and six rebounds for the Cougars, while classmate
Chloe McClain added six points and eight boards.Â
