HENDERSON, Tenn. - The IU Kokomo Baseball team earned wins over Freed-Hardeman Saturday and (RV) UNOH on Sunday in the final non-conference weekend of the year, closing out the 2025 Midwest Clash with a 2-2 record.
The Cougars took down Freed-Hardeman in game one of the weekend Saturday, before falling to (RV) University of Northwestern Ohio in a pitcher's duel in game two. IU South Bend got the better of IU Kokomo in game one Sunday, yet the Cougs bounced back in a big way to beat (RV) UNOH 10-4 in the weekend finale.
Game One: 9-5 Win @ Freed-Hardeman
- Freed-Hardeman struck first with a run in the home-half of the first, taking a 1-0 lead.
- The Cougars immediately responded with two runs in the top of the second on three hits, as Noah Wolf came through with a two-RBI bases loaded single, giving IUK a 2-1 lead.
- The Lions put up two runs of their own in the bottom of the second, quickly regaining a one-run lead.
- After a single and a pair of walks, Kasey Ross came through with a sac-fly to left field, scoring a run to even the game 3-3 in the fourth.
- IU Kokomo hung a five-spot in the sixth to lead 8-3, breaking the game open thanks to four free passes and a pair of hits. Mason Janz recorded a two-RBI double, Anthony Nino drew a bases-loaded walk, and Wolf added another two-RBI single.
- After an IUK pitching change, FHU scored two runs via a two-run shot, trailing 8-5 with one inning to play.
- Payton Hankins drew a leadoff walk, eventually advancing to third before scoring on a Janz sac-fly, adding an insurance run to make it a 9-5 lead. The Cougars would close out the four-run win in the bottom of the frame.
Pitching Lines:
- Alec Murphy got the start, going two innings after surrendering three earned runs on four hits and four walks, striking out two.
- Nathan Stanley turned in a stellar relief effort, earning the win (1-1) after posting three-consecutive zero's. Stanley allowed no runs on three hits, striking out one.
- Logan Greer gave up a two-spot in his lone-inning of work before striking out the side to limit the damage.
- Ethan Leslie entered to pitch the seventh, allowing one to reach via base-hit before shutting the door for a 9-5 victory.
Game Two: 5-2 Loss vs (RV) University of Northwestern Ohio (UNOH)
- The first of two games against the Racers of UNOH on the weekend proved to be a pitcher's duel, as IUK gave up five hits while UNOH allowed just two.
- Two of UNOH's five hits came in the top of the first. as the Racers jumped out to a quick 2-0 lead.
- IU Kokomo cut the deficit in half with a run in the second, as Brayden Coffey singled, stole second, advanced to third via wild pitch, and scored on a balk.
- The Racers final three runs of the game came in the top of the fourth on just one hit, leading 5-1 halfway through the game.
- The Cougars mustered one more run in the seventh on a hit and two errors, as (RV) UNOH closed out a 5-2 win.
Pitching Lines:
- AJ Burkhalter made the start on the mound for IU Kokomo, allowing five earned runs on five hits and five walks in three and two thirds innings of work. Burkhalter struck out six.
- Mason Whiteley turned in his best outing of the year in relief of Burkhalter, tossing the final three and a third without giving up a run or hit. Whiteley walked two and struck out three.
Game Three: 8-5 Loss vs IU South Bend
- IU Kokomo struck first with a pair of runs in the top of the second, yet the Titans hung a five-spot in the third to take control of the game with a 5-2 lead thru three complete
- After IUSB added a run in the fifth to lead by four, the Cougars cut the deficit in half in the sixth. Once Kasey Ross reached via fielder's choice, shortstop Gavin Smith went yard to make it a 6-4 ballgame with an inning and a half to play.
- IU South Bend managed to get those two runs back immediately in the bottom of the sixth before closing out the game in the seventh despite allowing a run to score. The Titans took down the Cougars 8-5 in game three of the weekend, and game one Sunday.
Pitching Lines:
- Sophomore RHP Koen Berry got the ball in game three of the weekend, taking his first loss of the season. Despite posting zero's in the first two frames, Berry's final line was: 3 IP, 5 ER, 3 H, BB, K.
- Dylan Bryant entered in relief of Berry, tossing an inning and a third while giving up one earned run on three hits and two free passes, striking out a pair.
- Jack Bruington tossed the final inning and two-thirds, allowing two earned runs on a hit and two walks.
Game Four: 10-4 Win vs (RV) University of Northwestern Ohio
- The Cougars led early in game four, scoring a pair of runs in the second for an early 2-0 lead. Gavin Smith led off the inning with a double before scoring on a Mike Talesky RBI single, as Talesky scored on a Noah Wolf RBI double.
- (RV) UNOH put up four runs in the bottom of the third to lead for the first time in the game. Those four runs came on five hits and two errors, giving the Racers a 4-2 lead thru three.
- IU Kokomo cut the deficit in half in the fourth, as Talesky singled, stole second, and scored on a Mason Janz two-out, RBI single.
- Three-straight Cougs reached to open the fifth, with Jacob Medvescek and Ross each singling ahead of a Smith free-pass. After a pitching change, Talesky grounded into a 6-4-3 double play, scoring Medvescek to even the game 4-4.
- The Cougars would explode for a four-spot in the sixth, breaking the game open with an 8-4 lead through five and a half after the first four batters all reached and scored in the frame.
- After Wolf was HBP to open the inning, Payton Hankins laid down a beautiful bunt and reached with a single. Janz followed with a single that was botched by the right fielder off the one-hop, scoring both Wolf and Hankins with Janz reaching third. Brayden Coffey would single Janz in, eventually scoring himself on a Kasey Ross sac-fly.
- Talesky walked and Wolf singled with one out in the seventh, before Hankins came through with a two-RBI single, extending the IUK lead to six at 10-4. The Cougars would close out the 10-4 victory thanks to a stellar outing from Kaleb Shelton.
Pitching Lines:
- Junior LHP Brett Huiner made his first start as a Cougar in the final game of the weekend, earning the win to improve to 1-0. Huiner tossed five complete, allowing four runs (one earned) on six hits and three walks, striking out four.
- Freshman Kaleb Shelton continued his impressive string of outings to open his career, slamming the door shut on a UNOH team that is receiving votes for the Top-25 with a scoreless sixth and seventh. Shelton did not allow a baserunner, facing the minimum to close out a 10-4 Cougar victory.
The Cougars will return to action this Wednesday for their first midweek game of the season, a match-up on the road with the Fighting Saints of Saint Francis (Ill.). First-pitch is currently set for 1:00 PM CT/2:00 PM ET.
