KOKOMO, Ind. - The IU Kokomo women's soccer team continued their winning ways Saturday evening at Kokomo Municipal Stadium, holding on to beat a tough Saint Xavier (Ill.) squad 1-0. With the win, the Cougars are now 3-2 and above .500 for the first time this season.
It was all Saint Xavier in the opening minutes, as they dominated possession on their way to a pair of shots on goal and a pair of corner kicks in the opening five minutes.
A shot from IU Kokomo freshman
Jaidin Millsaps seemed to stem the tides in the fifth minute, before
Kaiya Bogers found freshman midfielder
Hannah Hermansen in space seven minutes later.
Hermansen, with two defenders nearby, would have the ball deflected away before regaining possession and sending a shot past the SXU goalkeeper and into the back of the net to break the scoreless tie. Hermansen's first career goal would prove to be the lone goal of the match.
After taking the lead in the 12th minute, the IU Kokomo attack seemed to loosen up and play with much more confidence. The Cougs would put two more shots on goal in the opening half but entered the locker room at halftime with a one goal lead.
The second half was mainly controlled by the Cougars of Saint Xavier, as the IU Kokomo back-line was tested early and often in the final 45 minutes. The IU Kokomo defense along with junior goalkeeper
Kailee Moore stood strong for the remainder of the match, clinching a third-consecutive IU Kokomo shut-out victory.
Moore faced and saved seven Saint Xavier shots on target, while also coming out of the net to intercept a dangerous cross on more than one occasion. With the win, she is now 3-2 in net on the year with three shut-out victories.Â
IU Kokomo enjoy some rest before gearing up to host the Warriors of Indiana Tech next Sunday, September 8th, at 3:00 PM.
