KOKOMO, Ind. - The IU Kokomo baseball team opened a three game series against (RV) IU Southeast with a doubleheader on Saturday afternoon. The Cougars defeated the Grenadiers 9-1 in game one and 5-4 in game two. With these wins, the Cougars rise to 29-13 this season, and 17-3 in conference play.
Game One (9 innings): 9-1 Win
- The Cougars scored the first run of the game on a sacrifice fly by Jack Leverenz, driving in Alex Janke for an early 1-0 lead.
- In the second inning, Jacob Medvescek scored on a groundout by Jarod Gillespie, making it a 2-0 Cougar lead.
- An RBI single in the top of the third inning gave the Grenadiers their first and only run of the game, cuttting the deficit in half at 2-1.
- Riley Garczynski scored on an RBI by Kasey Ross in the fifth inning. This was quickly followed by Jacob Medvescek's sacrifice fly that sent Jack Leverenz across the plate. The Cougs led 4-1 through five.
- In the eighth inning, the Cougars poured on five more runs to take a commanding 9-1 lead, and Southeast failed to answer as IUK claimed a 9-1 victory.
- Logan Greer (4-2) started for Kokomo and tossed five innings for the win. Greer gave up four hits and one run while recording four strikeouts and three walks.
- Blake Kimball relieved Greer in the sixth inning and pitched the remainder of the game to earn his first save. Kimball struck out one batter and gave up two hits.
Game Two (7 innings) : 5-4 win
- IU Southeast scored the first run of game two, hitting an RBI single in the top of the first inning to lead 1-0.
- In the second, Garrett Lupoi crossed the plate on an RBI single by Brayden Coffey. Alex Janke then singled to send Tahj Borom home, and Coffey scored on a groundout by Riley Garczynski. Finally, Alex Janke crossed the plate on an RBI single by Tucker Platt to put the stamp on a four-run second inning for IUK.
- The Cougars increased their lead to 5-1 on Luke Hanson's RBI single in the third inning.
- In the fourth inning, IU Southeast scored three runs to cut their deficit to one. These would, however, be the final runs of the game as IUK held on for a 5-4 victory thanks to an impressive outing by Victor Fujiu.
- Mason Whiteley got the start for IU Kokomo, pitching three and a third innings. Whiteley allowed six hits and three earned runs while striking out three batters.
- Nathan Stanley entered the game in the fourth inning. Stanley gave up three hits and one run.
- Victor Fujiu relieved Stanley in the fourth and finished the game on the bump for the Cougars, improving to 3-0 on the year with the win. Fujiu recorded three strikeouts and one walk, while surrendering just one hit.
The Cougars will close their series against IU Southeast with a single game Sunday at noon, before yet another three-game home series against Midway University next weekend.
