Baseball Splits Doubleheader Tuesday at Indiana Tech

FORT WAYNE, Ind. - The Indiana University Kokomo baseball team took on in-state foe Indiana Tech in a doubleheader in Fort Wayne Tuesday. Both games of Tuesday's doubleheader were scheduled as seven inning games.

Game One: 14-1 Win
  • IU Kokomo got the scoring started with a run in the top of the first, as Riley Garczynski doubled, advanced to third on a passed ball, and scored on a Tucker Platt RBI groundout.
  • After a scoreless second, the Cougars would score two more in the third as Jack Leverenz hit the first of three game one bombs from the Cougs. Jack's blast was of the two-run variety, extending the IUK lead to 3-0.
  • Dylan Steele doubled to right-center to lead off the fourth. He would score on a Luke Hanson single to make it a 4-0 IUK lead.
  • Tucker Platt led off the fifth with a single before Jacob Medvescek followed two batters later with a two-run shot of his own, making it a 6-0 IUK lead.
  • The Cougars exploded for six runs on six hits in the top of the sixth, taking a commanding 12-0 lead.
  • Indiana Tech scored their lone run of the game in the sixth, a solo-shot that cut their deficit to 11 with one inning to play.
  • Thomas Obergfell hit the Cougs third two-run homer of game one in the seventh, giving the Cougs a 14-1 lead they would close out.
  • AJ Burkhalter got the start for IU Kokomo and was dominant in six strong innings of work, giving him his second career win to improve to 2-0. Burkhalter's final line: 6 IP, 5 H, ER, BB, 2 HBP, 7 K.
  • Dylan Keever made his second appearance of the season in the seventh, closing the door on a 14-1 win with a scoreless inning of work that included two strikeouts.

Game Two: 6-5 Loss
  • Indiana Tech struck first with three runs in the second, taking an early 3-0 lead.
  • The Warriors would add two more runs in the third, leading 5-0 after three complete.
  • IU Kokomo would get on the board in the fourth, as Riley Garczynski came through with a two-RBI single, scoring Tahj Borom and Thomas Obergfell while Jacob Medvescek was cut down at the plate. The Cougs trailed 5-2 through four innings.
  • The Cougars would tie the game with a three spot in the top half of the sixth, as Tucker Platt recorded an RBI single and Kasey Ross doubled down the line, scoring two to tie the game 5-5.
  • After IU Kokomo stranded the bases-loaded in the top of the seventh, Indiana Tech won it in the bottom-half via a walk-off wild pitch. The Warriors won game two 6-5 to split Tuesday's doubleheader.
  • Ben Harris got the start for IU Kokomo and left with a final line of: 2.1 IP, 7 H, 5 ER, 3 BB, 2 K.
  • Jack Bruington was the first man out of the pen for the Cougars in game two, putting a halt to a Warrior offense that had gotten going early. Bruington's final line: 1.2 IP, BB, 3 K.
  • Brandon Bultemeier impressed in two innings of work following Bruington. Bultemeier's final line: 2 IP, H.
  • Connor Hurt came in for the seventh and ended up with the loss, as he was responsible for the runners when he gave way to Victor Fujiu after recording one out in the inning.
