Women's Basketball Returns to Win Column with 66-61 Victory Over IU Southeast on Senior Day

KOKOMO, Ind. - On the day in which five IU Kokomo women's basketball seniors were recognized prior to the game as part of Senior Day festivities, the Cougars came out victorious with a five-point win over IU Southeast.

The Cougars and Grenadiers had already met once this season in New Albany, with the Grenadiers having won 77-67. Led by the following five seniors, McKenzie Cooper, Olivia Dowden, Kristen Ridner, Anna Kiser, and Alaya Chapman, the Cougs came into Saturday looking to avenge the early season loss.

Interim head coach Lisa Pflueger's starting five consisted of four seniors, with senior forward Olivia Dowden out due to injury. The Cougars trailed early in the quarter, but a Kristen Ridner triple gave IUK a 10-8 lead. The Grenadiers found themselves in front by two after one quarter.

A one of two trip to the line for IU Southeast to open the second quarter extended their lead to three, but IU Kokomo responded with an 8-0 run to lead 24-19.

The Grenadiers battled back to take a lead late in the half, but the two sides entered the half deadlocked at 31 apiece.

The two teams seemingly traded buckets for the entirety of the third quarter, but IU Kokomo did well to maintain control and a narrow lead through the opening 30 minutes.

Entering the fourth quarter with a 46-42 lead, the Cougars refused to surrender the lead in the final 10 minutes. The IUK lead got as big as nine with 36 seconds remaining, eventually closing out a 66-61 Senior Day win over IU Southeast.

Senior forward Alaya Chapman led IU Kokomo offensively with 18 points, while Kelsi Langley was the lone other Cougar in double-figures with 14 points. Seniors Kristen Ridner and Anna Kiser each chipped in nine points while Kiser also grabbed seven rebounds.

The Cougars will play their final home game of the season Tuesday, as they will host the Mighty Oaks of Oakland City for a 5:30 PM tip-off.
