Women's Basketball Falls to Madonna 66-59

KOKOMO, Ind. - The Indiana University Kokomo women's basketball team returned home Wednesday for just their second home game of the season, hosting a Madonna squad that entered the game with a record of 7-3. The Crusaders emerged victorious 66-59, dropping the Cougars to 4-5 on the year.

Wednesday's opening quarter featured slow-starts for both teams and a combined 12 turnovers on the way to being the lowest scoring quarter of the game.

Madonna led 9-5 with four minutes to play in the first, but seven straight IUK points gave the Cougars a 12-9 lead with 90 seconds remaining in the quarter. The Crusaders would knock down a jumper at the buzzer to trail by just one after one period.

Mia Catey scored in the paint at the six minute mark to give the Cougars a two-point lead, but the Crusaders outscored IUK in the final minutes of the first half to lead 28-24 at halftime.

IU Kokomo found themselves within a point of Madonna on multiple occasions early in the third quarter, but the Crusaders maintained a lead throughout the period while building it to 10 through 30 minutes.

After struggling to cut the deficit below seven for much of the fourth, a Chloe McClain triple trimmed the Madonna lead to six with 4:05 to play. That was as close as the Cougars would get until there were just 15 seconds remaining, as the Crusaders closed out a 66-59 win over IU Kokomo.

Kelsi Langley led IU Kokomo offensively Wednesday with an efficient 14 points on 4-6 shooting from the field and 6-6 from the free throw line. Two other Cougars scored in double-figures, as Shamaria Walker finished with 11 on 5-6 shooting and Chloe McClain added 10.

Mia Catey recorded eight points and six rebounds while Anna Kiser totaled seven points and six boards.

Head coach Lisa Pflueger's Cougars will be back in action Saturday for a road game at in-state foe Bethel. Tip-off is set for 1:00 PM.
