PORTSMOUTH, Ohio. - The IU Kokomo women's soccer team closed out the 2024 regular season Saturday in southeast Ohio, playing Shawnee State to a scoreless draw. As a result, the Bears and Cougars finished tied in the RSC standings with identical marks of 3-3-3.
IU Kokomo and Shawnee State both entered Saturday's final regular season match knowing they needed to avoid a loss, as a loss for either squad could have ended their season short of advancing to the RSC Championship.
The two squads traded possession for much of the first half, as there were only four total shots on goal. IU Kokomo's
Layla Miller recorded each of the Cougars two first-half shots on goal.
Head coach
Sohaila Akhavein's squad dominated possession in the opening minutes of the second half, as the Cougars earned a pair of corners and
Mackenzie Gibbons put a pair of shots on goal in the first 10 minutes.
Addison Waller and
Kaiya Bogers each tested the Bears goalie in the second half with shots on target, but neither were able to find the back of the net as the match ended in a 0-0 draw.
IU Kokomo goalkeeper
Kailee Moore stopped all four Shawnee State shots on target in the draw.
The Cougars have punched their ticket to the River States Conference Championship, as they are the #5 seed and will play at WVU Tech Wednesday at 5:30 PM.
