KOKOMO, Ind. - The IU Kokomo volleyball team showcased a balanced offensive attack in a sweep of IU Columbus Tuesday evening, improving to 16-4 overall and 4-0 in River States Conference play with the victory.
Not only was it a strong offensive attack from the Cougars, but they also showed just how scrappy and solid a defense they possess.
Ellie Garland led the Cougs with a match-high 14 digs, while
Lexi Broyles,
Alexis Baney, and
Cali Cummings combined for an impressive seven total blocks between the three of them.
Baney enjoyed a career night Tuesday, flooring a career-high 10 kills to go along with her two blocks.
Mya Grigsby also recorded 10 kills, as Broyles added eight while Richman and Connell tallied six and Cummings contributed five.
After a back and forth start to the match, IU Kokomo utilized a 6-0 run to take a 16-9 lead over halfway thru the opening set. The Cougars doubled-up the Crimson Pride at 20-10 before going on to take the opener in commanding fashion, 25-12.
Trailing by one at the midway point of set two, IUK won five-straight points with three of them coming via
Allison Richman kills, making it a four-point Cougar lead. The Cougs led by one at 21-20 before winning four of the next five points to take set two by four.
Heather Hayes's squad proved to be dominant from start to finish in the final set, cruising to a 25-13 third-set victory to complete a fourth-straight sweep.
IU Kokomo finished the match with an impressive 49 kills on 95 attempts, good for a hitting percentage of .411.
The Cougars will be back-in-action Friday as they will travel to Owensboro to take on Brescia before battling the Mighty Oaks Saturday in Oakland City.
