KOKOMO, Ind. - The IU Kokomo women's basketball team defeated WVU Tech by a score of 67-50 on Saturday afternoon, earning their second conference win to improve to 5-11 overall and 2-6 in conference games.
After the Golden Bears hit an early jump shot,
Olivia Dowden scored consecutive buckets to jump-start a 10-0 IU Kokomo scoring run over the next three minutes, giving the Cougars an early 10-2 lead.
WVU Tech quickly cut their deficit to three, but another IUK offensive, run capped by a triple from
Anya Friend, gave the Cougars a 17-8 lead after the first quarter.
The Golden Bears hit two three-pointers early in the second quarter, but the Cougars continued to pull further away from their opponents, scoring 19 points in the quarter to lead 36-16 going into the second half.
To start the final 20 minutes,
Kristen Ridner and
Alaya Chapman scored baskets and
Olivia Dowden hit a triple to increase IUK's lead to 27. The Golden Bears found some offensive life in the latter half of the quarter, but still trailed by 16 going into the fourth.
Shamaria Walker nailed a three-point shot to open the final period, followed by a layup fromÂ
Kelsi Langley to bring the Cougars' lead back to 21. Any attempt for a comeback by WVU Tech was shut down by the Cougars, who sealed a 67-50 victory after late free throws by
Cameryn Rector and
Sammy Provenzano.
The Cougars were led offensively by
Alaya Chapman with 12 points, closely followed by
Olivia Dowden with 11 and
Anna Kiser and
Cameryn Rector with 10 points each. Kiser also pulled down a career-high 15 rebounds in the win.
The Cougars will be back in action next week for two road games against conference foes Shawnee State on Thursday and Point Park on Saturday.
