Three Cougars Score in 3-3 Draw at IU East

CENTERVILLE, Ind. - The Indiana University Kokomo women's soccer team opened River States Conference play Thursday evening at IU East. The Cougars & Red Wolves played to a 3-3 draw in a match played at Centerville High School, as three different Cougars found the back of the net.

IU Kokomo led by a goal on three different occasions Thursday in what was otherwise an evenly played match. Both IUK & IUE finished with eight shots on goal, while IUK eeked out the corner kick battle 4-3.

After an even start, Keely Hoopingarner scored her fourth goal in the last two matches to give the Cougars a lead 21 minutes into the match. Hoopingarner's goal was assisted by Cassie Dispennett, her first assist of the year.

The Red Wolves would respond with their first goal of the day in the 35th minute, as Morgan Grudich and Maggie Bischoff combined to even the match 1-1. Bischoff had a hand in all three Red Wolves goals, scoring a pair after assisting on the first.

With just 23 seconds remaining in the first half, an impressive touch from Mackenzie Gibbons found its way over the head of the IUE goalkeeper and across the goal-line. Gibbons's second goal of the year gave IUK a 2-1 halftime lead.

IU East did not wait long before getting the match back on level-ground, as the Red Wolves scored in the 52nd minute to tie the match 2-2.

IU Kokomo did well to return to the offensive after losing a second lead of the match. The Cougars would score again in the 68th minute as Ashlyn Morefield beat the goalie on a ball that was assisted by Evalin Hair. The goal was Morefield's third of the year and Hair's first assist of the season, giving IUK a 3-2 lead with 21 minutes remaining.

As they did the first two times while trailing by a goal, IU East managed to score in the 82nd minute to tie the match 3-3 with less than eight minutes to play. Neither team managed to find the back of the net a fourth time, as Thursday's RSC opener ended in a 3-3 draw.

The Cougars have a short turnaround, as they will welcome first-year RSC foe Shawnee State to Kokomo Municipal Stadium. Kickoff is set for 1:00 PM.
