Hoopingarner Hat-Trick Leads Cougars to 3-1 Win at Huntington

HUNTINGTON, Ind. - The IU Kokomo women's soccer team played their final non-conference match of the season Tuesday night, taking down in-state foe Huntington University 3-1 on the road. With the win, the Cougars improve to 2-3-3 on the season.

The first 45 minutes of Tuesday's match in Huntington featured scoring chances for both sides, with both teams goalkeepers making saves to keep the match scoreless at halftime. The Foresters had six shots on target in the first half compared to the Cougars four.

IU Kokomo got the scoring started in the 51st minute, as senior forward Keely Hoopingarner scored her third goal of the season to give the Cougars a 1-0 advantage with less than 40 minutes to play.

In the 64th minute, Huntington committed a foul that led to a penalty kick, with Hoopingarner stepping up to take the shot. Keely's first shot was saved, but HU's goalie was called for leaving the line early, rewarding her with another opportunity. Hoopingarner would make good on the second-chance to extend the IUK lead to 2-0.

Just four minutes later, Hoopingarner sent a shot near-post past the goalie for her third goal of the night and her first hat trick of the season. Keely's fifth goal of the year gave IU Kokomo a 3-0 lead with 20 minutes remaining.

Huntington would score a goal in the 84th minute, but the Cougars closed out a 3-1 win to return to the win column before beginning RSC play next week.

Both teams finished the match with ten shots on goal. Junior Kelsi Hoot had three shots on goal in 84 minutes of action for the Cougars.

Sydney Miller got a second-consecutive start in goal for IU Kokomo, making nine saves on ten Forester shots on goal to earn the win.

The Cougars will return to action Thursday, September 21st, as they will begin River States Conference play with a road match at IU East.
