PITTSBURGH, Pa. – The IU Kokomo baseball team split Friday afternoon's doubleheader at Point Park, winning game one 5-4 after scoring three runs in the ninth, before dropping game two 10-1.
Game One Offensively
- IU Kokomo found the scoreboard first, scoring two in the top of the third for an early 2-0 lead. Tahj Borom and Riley Garczynski had consecutive one-out singles, before Borom scored on a Thomas Obergell sac-fly and Garczynski scored on a Tucker Platt single.
- Point Park immediately responded to tie the game 2-2, scoring the two runs on two hits and one error.
- Neither team managed to score again until the seventh, when the Pioneers scored a pair of runs on three hits to take their first lead of the game at 4-2.
- Trailing 4-2 in the top of the ninth, Platt led off the inning with a single and Noah Hurlock followed with a two-run homer to left-centerfield to tie the game at four. Luke Barnes reached via HBP and pinch-runner Gavin Smith scored on Garczynski's third-hit of the game for a 5-4 lead.
- Brandon Bultemeier slammed the door-shut in the bottom of the ninth, retiring the Pioneers in order.
Game One Pitching
- River States Conference Pitcher of the Year candidate Lucas Letsinger pitched well again Friday afternoon, tossing another seven strong innings. Letsinger allowed four runs (three earned) on eight hits and one walk while striking out five.
- Brandon Bultemeier came out of the pen and delivered a pair of scoreless innings to earn the win and improve to 3-0 on the season. Bultemeier allowed no baserunners in his two innings of work, striking out a pair of Pioneer hitters.
Game Two Offensively
- Point Park took the lead in the bottom of the first and controlled the momentum throughout the game, as the Pioneers hit three home runs in the first three innings to lead 4-0.
- The Cougars scored their lone run of the game in the top of the fourth to cut the deficit to three at 4-1. Nolan Bowser walked, and Smith pinch-ran for him, scoring on a Platt single to left-field.
- The Pioneers scored a pair of runs in the fourth and four more in the seventh to lead 10-1, the score they would win by.
Game Two Pitching
- JT Holton got the start and took the loss to fall to 5-3 on the season. Holton tossed 3.1 innings, allowing six runs (five earned) on six hits and one walk while striking out a man.
- Ethan Leslie tossed 1.1 innings, allowing four earned runs on two hits and two walks.
- Garrison Brege threw the final 1.1 innings, allowing a single hit and no runs to go along with two strikeouts.
The Cougars will return to action for the rubber match tomorrow, scheduled for 12:00 PM ET. There will be no live stream tomorrow due to potential weather in the area.
