HUNTINGBURG, Ind. - The Cougar baseball team completed the sweep of Oakland City Monday afternoon with a 10-3 win at League Stadium. With three wins on the opening weekend of RSC play, IU Kokomo is 3-0 in conference action and 10-7 overall.
The Cougar offense took a while to get going Monday but they eventually managed to put up a 10-spot in the nine-inning series finale. IU Kokomo's first hit came off the bat of
Tahj Borom in the top of the third, as Borom singled to lead off the inning but was stranded.
Sophomore LHP
JT Holton got the start on the mound for IUK and gave up two earned runs on five hits in four innings of work. Oakland City struck first, scoring a pair of runs in the fourth via a solo-shot and an RBI-single to lead 2-0 through four innings.
IU Kokomo responded immediately, as
Jack Leverenz drew a one-out walk and the next batter,
Luke Barnes, would launch a two-run homer to left to tie the game 2-2.
Dylan Steele entered the game in relief of Holton and would keep the score 2-2 after five innings.
The Cougars scored three runs on three hits and an error in the sixth to take a three-run lead and put Steele in line for the win.
Nolan Bowser led off the inning with a double and would score on a
Jarod Gillespie one-out single. Gillespie would score on a Barnes RBI-single, and Leverenz, who reached via HBP, would score an unearned run on an E2 to cap off the inning.
The Mighty Oaks scored their final run of the game in the bottom of the sixth on a hit and one IUK error.
Ethan Leslie and
Victor Fujiu combined to toss the final three innings out of the pen, allowing just one hit while inducing five fly-outs, two ground-outs, and striking out one between the pair.
IUK would tack on some insurance runs in the eighth, scoring five runs on five hits and one Mighty Oaks error. Hurlock, Barnes, Borom, and Garczynski collected RBI's in the inning, and IU Kokomo went on to beat Oakland City 10-3 to complete the series sweep.
Dylan Steele earned the win on the mound to improve to 1-0, allowing an unearned run on two hits and one walk while striking out four hitters.
IU Kokomo will return to action tomorrow afternoon at Kokomo Municipal Stadium for their first mid-week game of the season. The Cougars will host IUPUC for a 3:00 P.M. first-pitch.
