Record-Breaking Indoor Track & Field Season Comes to a Close at NAIA Indoor Nationals

BROOKINGS, S.D. - The 2022-2023 indoor track and field season has come to a close after four IU Kokomo athletes competed in six events at the 2023 NAIA Indoor Track and Field Championships.

When asked about the week spent in South Dakota at the NAIA Indoor Championships, head coach Josh Colvin had this to say: "It was a great experience for our four athletes to compete in six events in the NAIA Indoor Track and Field Championships. We had the most athletes representing IU Kokomo in program history. This was the first year we had a male track athlete and a female field athlete. They all proved they belonged among the best in the nation."

Makala Pfefferkorn became the first ever IU Kokomo women's field athlete to qualify for the NAIA Indoor Championships while Drew Caldwell became IU Kokomo's first men's track athlete to compete at the NAIA Indoor Championships.

Lanie Pocock qualified for her third career NAIA National Championships in the racewalk and collected IU Kokomo's best finish of the weekend. Despite being ranked 16th, Pocock finished 12th in the nation while setting a new school record with a time of 17:19.94.

Sophomore Makala Pfefferkorn competed in three events this weekend in South Dakota, having qualified for the 60m hurdles, long jump, and triple jump. Makala competed in the 60m hurdles and long jump Friday, before competing in the triple jump Saturday. Pfefferkorn finished 25th in the triple jump with a mark of 11.17m, 28th in the long jump with a mark of 5.35m, and a 40th place finish in the 60m hurdles with a time of 9.23m.

Casey Pfefferkorn competed in the women's mile after earning an at-large bid to the NAIA Indoor Championships. After coming in ranked 20th, Pfefferkorn ran a smart race in order to finish 19th with a time of 5:22.96.

Drew Caldwell qualified for the NAIA Indoor Championships via an at-large bid in the 600 meters. Caldwell entered the event ranked 20th but crossed the finish line in 19th place with a time of 1:23.22.
