KOKOMO, Ind.- The IU Kokomo Women's Basketball team fell by a score of 77-64 to Saint Mary-of-the-Woods College at home on Saturday.
The Cougars got off to a strong start to the game, with
Anna Kiser and
Alaya Chapman both scoring layups in the opening two minutes. Three-pointers from
Kaylie Abriani,
Mia Catey, and
Anya Friend propelled IUK to a 19-13 lead by the end of the first quarter.
However, the Cougars lost control in the second quarter, as a 13-2 run by Saint Mary's in the final five minutes of the quarter gave them a 33-27 lead at halftime.
Offensive woes continued for the Cougars to start the second half as they failed to keep up with SMWC, falling behind by 11 points three minutes into the quarter. A
Shamaria Walker layup and an
Anya Friend triple put IUK back within six, but by the time the third quarter ended, the Cougars were trailing by 19.
IU Kokomo had a strong fourth quarter, scoring 21 to Saint Mary's 15, as various fouls from Saint Mary's frequently put the Cougars at the free throw line. But it was not enough to overcome the deficit, and the Pomeroys outlasted the Cougars 77-64.
Junior
Anna Kiser led the Cougars offensively, scoring 12 points in the loss.
The Cougars return home on Tuesday againt Midway University, before traveling to IU Southeast next Saturday.
