Baseball Beats Cumberland 14-7, St. Andrews 15-2 to Complete 3-0 Opening Weekend

EMERSON, Ga. - The IU Kokomo baseball team finished off an undefeated opening weekend Saturday with a 14-7 win over Cumberland and a 15-2 win against St. Andrews. The Cougars outscored opponents 43-11 on the weekend and will head into next weekend's series in Georgia with a record of 3-0.

Game One Offensively
  • Nolan Bowser and Jonathan Latham walked in the first inning before Dylan Steele singled, loading the bases for Noah Hurlock. Hurlock came through in his first AB of the year, launching a grand slam to left for a 4-0 IUK lead.
  • Cumberland cut the IUK lead in half in the bottom of the first, scoring two runs.
  • Luke Barnes hit a solo-shot in the second and Latham hit a two-run bomb, giving IUK a 7-1 lead.
  • Cumberland scored three in the second, trimming the Cougar lead to two at 7-5.
  • Jack Leverenz singled to center in the third, scoring Hurlock who had reached via a walk.
  • Neither team scored in the fourth, but IUK tacked on four more runs in the fifth to extend the lead to 12-5.
  • Two Cougars scored via a wild-pitch in the sixth, giving IUK a 14-5 lead.
  • IU Kokomo went on to beat Cumberland 14-7 after the Phoenix pushed two runs across in the seventh.

Game One Pitching
  • Lucas Letsinger earned the win to improve to 1-0 on the year. Letsinger threw five innings, allowing seven hits and five earned runs while striking out three.
  • Ethan Leslie tossed the final two innings, allowing two hits and two earned runs while striking out three.

Game Two Offensively
  • The Cougars scored early and often, pushing six runs across in the first. Riley Garczynski, Nolan Bowser, and Dylan Steele all doubled in the inning and came around to score.
  • Luke Barnes hit his second home-run of the day, this one a two-run bomb to give IUK a 6-0 lead.
  • St. Andrews scored a run in the first, but Nolan Bowser hit a solo-shot in the second to regain a six-run lead.
  • Jarod Gillespie singled to lead off the third and Tucker Platt followed with a two-run bomb give IUK a 9-1 lead.
  • St. Andrews scored their final run of the game in the third to cut the lead to 9-2.
  • IU Kokomo added three runs in the fourth to take a ten-run lead, including a two-run homer from freshman Hayden Davis, before being held scoreless in the fifth.
  • The Cougars scored one in the sixth and two in the seventh to close out a dominant 15-2 win over St. Andrews.

Game Two Pitching
The Cougars will return to Georgia next weekend for a four-game series at Truett McConnell University. First pitch Friday is set for 3:00 P.M.
