CLEVELAND, Ga. - The IU Kokomo baseball team opened the weekend at Truett McConnell with a 7-0 shut-out win before falling 13-2 in game two of Friday's doubleheader. Due to impending weather, the Cougars and Bears will play a single nine-inning game Saturday with a 12:00 PM first pitch.
Game One Offensively
- With two outs in the top of the first, Jonathan Latham reached on an error by the SS, sparking a four-run inning. Dylan Steele followed with a double down the line, scoring Latham's courtesy runner, Gavin Smith.
- Noah Hurlock singled to put runners on the corners before Tucker Platt came through with an RBI single. Jack Leverenz followed Platt with a 2-RBI single to make it a 4-0 IU Kokomo lead.
- Dylan Steele singled up the middle with one away in the third, setting up Tucker Platt for a two-run bomb. IUK led 6-0 after three innings.
- Tucker Platt earned his third hit of the game to lead off the sixth, and would come around to score on a Thomas Obergfell RBI groundout, giving IUK their final run in a 7-0 win.
Game One Pitching
- Ben Harris earned the win with a dominant outing. Harris threw six innings, allowed four hits, walked one, struck out one, and gave up zero runs.
- Brandon Bultemeier threw the final inning, walking two and giving up a hit while allowing zero runs.
Game Two Offensively
- IU Kokomo went down in order in the top of the first, and Truett McConnell scored three runs in the bottom of the inning to give IUK their first deficit of the season.
- Riley Garczynski led off the third with a solo-shot to left-field, his second bomb of the season.
- Now trailing 3-1 with two outs in the inning, Platt doubled to left field and freshman Will Richter singled to center field for his first collegiate hit, scoring Platt and cutting the deficit to 3-2.
- The Bears responded with two runs on three hits and one IUK error, extending the lead to 5-2.
- Truett added three runs in the fourth, three runs in the fifth, and two in the sixth to win 13-2.
Game Two Pitching
- Tyler Hensch took the loss, throwing the first inning and giving up three runs on one hit and two BB's while striking out one.
- Ethan Leslie followed Hensch, throwing two and two thirds innings and allowing five earned runs on four hits while striking out one.
- Connor Hurt tossed an inning, allowing four earned runs on five hits.
- Mason Whiteley pitched an inning, allowing no runs on two hits.
The Cougars will return to Truett McConnell for a single nine-inning game Saturday with first-pitch scheduled for 12:00 PM.
