GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. - The Indiana University Kokomo women's basketball team earned their first win of the season Wednesday night, dominating Kuyper College on their way to an 80-44 win.
The win improves the Cougars to 1-1 early in the year, and is first-year head coach Jacob Yorg's first win at IU Kokomo. 11 different Cougars scored in the victory, including five double-digit scorers.
IU Kokomo scored the first four points of the game for an early lead, but a solid first quarter from the Cougars of Kuyper College kept them in the game early on. A 10-0 run from Kuyper gave them a 15-10 lead, which was lessened to a point by the end of the first quarter.
The Cougars of IUK found themselves trailing 17-14 before four-straight points from
McKenzie Cooper gave IUK a lead they would not relinquish the rest of the game. Leading 22-19 with five minutes remaining in the first half, IU Kokomo outscored Kuyper 14-4 down the stretch for a 13-point halftime lead.
IU Kokomo began the second half in a big way, opening with a 14-0 run to take a commanding 27-point lead at 50-23. IUK managed to hold Kuyper to just six third quarter points, taking a 54-29 lead into the fourth quarter.
The fourth quarter of Wednesday's contest proved to be the highest scoring quarter of the game, as it saw IUK outscore Kuyper 26-15 to close out an 80-44 road-win.
In her long-awaited collegiate debut, sophomore
Kelsi Langley led IU Kokomo in scoring with 14 points, while also snagging six rebounds.
Anna Kiser,
Cameryn Rector, and
Shamaria Walker each poured in 11, while Kiser grabbed nine boards and Walker recorded eight.
Alaya Chapman added 10 points off the bench.
The Cougars will return home for Sunday's home-opener, as Cleary University will pay a visit for a 3:00 tip-off.
