Volleyball Picks Up 15th Straight Win with Sweep of Saint Xavier (Ill.)

CHICAGO, Ill. – The Indiana University Kokomo volleyball team extended their win-streak to 15 games Wednesday night, sweeping the Saint Xavier Cougars in the final non-conference match of the regular season.

IU Kokomo's 15th consecutive win comes on the day in which the team received the program's highest ever NAIA Top 25 ranking of 15.

The opening set proved to be a back and forth affair early on, as neither side managed to lead by more than two. IU Kokomo won four consecutive points while tied 11-11, taking a four-point lead in what was the closest set of the night.

Saint Xavier was never able to trim the deficit to less than three, as the Cougars of IUK took set one 25-21.

IU Kokomo opened the second set strong, winning the first three points and six of the first seven to lead 6-1. Saint Xavier managed to cut the lead to two at 7-5, however IUK re-built the lead to five to force an SXU timeout.

Leading by four, IUK reeled off four-straight points to double their lead late at 17-9. The Cougs would go on to take set two, 25-17.

Through 13 points in the third-set, IU Kokomo led 9-4, forcing tenured SXU head coach Bob Heersema to take a timeout. IUK would utilize a 6-0 run that featured four kills and an ace to take a double-digit lead at 18-8. IUK won seven of the final ten points to close out the sweep with a 25-11 third-set win.

Lexi Broyles led IUK with match highs in kills and blocks, collecting 12 kills and seven blocks. Audrey Strawsma and Maggie Connell each added nine kills.

Kaley Lyons had a strong match with 18 assists and seven digs, while fellow setter Allison Richman contributed 13 assists and four blocks. Alyvia Smith led the Cougs in digs with 10 while also earning four assists, as Mya Shively had six digs.

The Cougars will return home for their final match of the week, a home match Friday night against the Trailblazers of Ohio Christian. First-serve is set for 7:00 PM.
