Hoopingarner Scores Twice, Cougs Shut Out IU East 3-0 in First Conference Match

KOKOMO, Ind. – The IU Kokomo women's soccer team opened River States Conference play Thursday night with a 3-0 victory over IU East. With the win, the Cougars improved to 5-1-2 overall, and 1-0 in RSC play.

IU Kokomo controlled possession throughout much of the first half, and despite eight first-half corner kicks for the Cougs, they were unable to find the back of the net. Each team tallied seven shots in the opening 45 minutes, but the match was still scoreless at halftime.

The Cougars came out of the halftime break with energy, attacking early with the score still 0-0.

Less than seven minutes into the second half, Keely Hoopingarner wowed the crowd to put the Cougs in front. Off of a throw in from Brooke Gill, Hoopingarner shook a defender and fired a left-footed shot from just outside the box, beating the goalkeeper high for a 1-0 IUK lead.

Hoopingarner would strike again in the 78th minute to tack on to the IU Kokomo lead. Andi Williams earned the assist with a beautiful touch-pass, and Hoopingarner would convert to give the Cougs a two-goal lead.

The Cougars earned a penalty kick in the 80th minute, as IU East's Vanessa Temple took down Kaiya Bogers in the box. Ashlyn Morefield took the PK for the Cougs and would cash in on the opportunity, giving IU Kokomo a 3-0 lead with ten minutes to play.

The IU Kokomo defense impressed once again Thursday evening, and would close out the match to complete the win. Senior defender Brooke Gill was relentless on the back line in the shut-out win, making multiple effort and hustle plays.

Hoopingarner, IU Kokomo's leading goalscorer, has now scored 12 goals through eight matches.

Freshman goalkeeper Kailee Moore earned the clean-sheet victory, the second shut-out of her career.

The Cougars will return to the pitch Saturday, as they will hit the road to battle RSC foe Brescia. Kickoff is set for 1:00 P.M.
