KOKOMO, Ind. – The Indiana University Kokomo women's soccer team took an early lead in Saturday's season opening matchup against the University of Michigan-Dearborn but were forced to settle for a draw after a second-half goal from the Wolverines.

Having led last year's Cougar squad in goals, junior Keely Hoopingarner was attacking early. Hoopingarner sent a shot wide of the goal in the third minute before netting the Cougars first goal of the season in the tenth minute for a 1-0 lead!

A lead pass from Kelsi Hoot set Hoopingarner up for a shot from the top right corner of the box and Hoopingarner did not waste the opportunity, beating the goalie in the top left corner for her first goal of the season.

The Wolverines threatened the Cougars and goaltender Erica Bolinger a couple times in the final 30 minutes of the half but Bolinger and the Cougs defense stood strong.

After halftime, Michigan-Dearborn capitalized on a chance in the 59th minute to tie the match at one. Emmi Pinkowski scored for the Wolverines on a play that was set up by two touch passes. 

IU Kokomo controlled play for the remainder of the match, including a high-danger chance via free-kick in the 78th minute. Skylar Mannon lost her defender in the box to earn a header off of the Ashlyn Morefield free-kick but sent it just wide of goal. Mackenzie Pedigo earned a corner-kick in the 79th minute but nothing came of it.

Neither team found the back of the net in the final ten minutes of the match. The Cougars are 0-0-1 after Saturday's 1-1 draw with Michigan-Dearborn.

The Cougars will return to the pitch Wednesday, August 24, as they face their first road test of the year in Holy Cross College. Kickoff is set for 5:00 PM.
