Mills Collects Five Hits and Cougars Out-Hit Midway in 12-11 RSC Championship Opening Round Loss

CHILLICOTHE, Ohio – The Indiana University Kokomo baseball team dropped their River States Conference Championship opening round matchup to Midway Thursday evening, 12-11. The Cougars led 5-4 after two innings of play at VA Memorial Stadium, but Midway pushed five runs across the plate in the third and never relinquished the lead.
 
All 23 runs scored in the game came before the seventh inning, as each team was held scoreless in the final three frames.
 
Key Moments
  • Midway jumped out to a quick 2-0 lead in the top of the first.
  • Noah Hurlock tied things in the bottom of the inning with a 2-RBI double.
  • Jared Heard scored on a Jack Leverenz RBI groundout and Hurlock eventually scored on a wild pitch.
  • The Eagles tied things at four in the top of the second thanks to a Nick Eastham 2-RBI double.
  • The Cougars regained the lead in the bottom of the second on a Jared Heard RBI single, scoring Thomas Obergfell.
  • Midway exploded for five runs in the top of the third on three hits and three Cougar errors.
  • Trailing 9-5 in the bottom of the third, Leverenz led off the inning with a double down the left-field line and later scored on a passed ball.
  • Bryant Fontanez hit the lone homerun of the game in the fourth for Midway, scoring two and extending the Eagle lead to 11-6.
  • Pat Mills singled before Jared Heard reached via walk in the bottom of the fourth, and both came around to score, cutting the Midway lead to 11-8.
  • Riley Garczynski led off the bottom of the fifth with a double to left-center field, advanced to third on a wild pitch, and scored on a Luke Hanson RBI groundout.
  • The Eagles recorded a Sac Fly to go up 12-9 in the top of the sixth, scoring Cameron Smith who led off the inning with a single.
  • Mills singled and advanced to second via a Jared Heard walk in the sixth, both advanced on a Hurlock sac-bunt, and both crossed the plate on a Leverenz single to make it 12-11 Midway.
 
Pitching
  • Lucas Letsinger came out of the bullpen for 5.2 innings of relief, giving up three runs on five hits while striking out seven and walking one.
  • Ethan Leslie tossed a scoreless ninth, striking out two and allowing a hit and a walk.
