KOKOMO, Ind. – A walk-off win in extra innings secured the series victory for the Indiana University Kokomo baseball team as the Cougars defeated Midway, 7-6 in 10 innings.
The Cougars move to 20-11 overall on the season and 10-1 in River States Conference. The series victory puts IU Kokomo in a tie for the top spot in the league with Point Park.
Key Moments
- Midway led off the second inning getting a runner aboard via a hit by pitch. An RBI double would plate the Eagles first run of the game.
- Three hits by Midway in the third would result in two runs, extending the Eagle lead to 3-0.
- The Cougars offense pushed a run across in the sixth frame after Riley Garczynski and Pat Mills reached to start the inning. After the Eagles nearly turned a triple play, Jared Heard singled to centerfield to score Noah Hurlock to make it a 3-1 game.
- Dylan Steele came on to pinch hit in the seventh and ripped a double to left centerfield. Garrison Brege pinch ran for Steele and moved up to third on a sacrifice bunt by Tucker Platt. Platt moved up as the Eagles mishandled the bunt, putting Cougars at second and third with no outs. After a strikeout, Obergfell picked up an RBI on a fielder's choice and a Garczynski RBI tied things at three through seven complete innings.
- Midway added a run in the top of the eight to take 4-3 lead.
- Platt singled to right center in the eighth to score Jack Leverenz and Bryce Lenz, giving IUK a 5-4 lead. Obergell added an insurance run for the Cougars as he laid down a bunt to score pinch runner, Sean Becker.
- The Eagles scored two in the top of the ninth to even the game at six.
- Hurlock ripped a one-out double in the bottom of the ninth but would be one-of-two IUK runners stranded in the inning, sending the game to extras.
- Midway went down in order in the top of the 10th inning.
- Becker drew a leadoff walk in the bottom of the 10th inning and moved into scoring position with a stolen base. Becker advanced 90 feet on a ground out from Obergfell.
- Down to their final out, Garczynski came to the plate with a chance to win the game. The sophomore hit a dribbler to third base that the defense mishandled, allowing Becker to score to end the game and clinch the series for the Cougars.
Pitching
- JT Holton got the start for the Cougars and went five innings, allowing three runs on six hits while striking out five.
- Lucas Letsinger tossed 3.1 innings in relief and gave up three runs.
- Ethan Leslie moved to 2-0 on the year as the freshman tossed 1.2 innings, allowing just one hit.
By the Numbers
- Garczynski and Platt each finished with two hits and two RBI.
- Obergfell also drove in two runs.
