OWENSBORO, Ky. – The Indiana University Kokomo baseball team opened its final road River States Conference series with a 9-1 victory over Brescia University on Friday afternoon. The Cougars and Bearcats were scheduled to play a doubleheader, but heavy rain in the area postponed the second game.
IU Kokomo moves to 22-14 overall on the season and 12-3 in conference action.
Key Moments
- Pat Mills blasted his 13th home run of season in the first inning to get the Cougars on the board. Two Brescia errors allowed IUK to score two more runs to make it a 3-0 contest. With two outs, Seth DeNoyer made it 5-0 with a two-run blast.
- Brescia got a run back in the home half of the first to make it 5-1.
- Dylan Steele added three runs for the Cougars in the second as he belted his second home run of the season.
- Thomas Obergfell ripped a one-out double in the eighth inning and later scored on a Noah Hurlock double to make it a 9-1 game.
- Mason Whiteley came on in the ninth to replace IUK starer Owen Callaghan. Whitley struck out the side to end the game.
Pitching
- Callaghan fanned a season-high 12 batters in eight innings of work to earn his team-best sixth win of the year.
- Whiteley struck out three of the fourth batters he faced in the final inning.
