BLUEFIELD, W.V. – The Indiana University Kokomo baseball team suffered a setback on Sunday as they dropped a River States Conference doubleheader to West Virginia Tech. The Cougars comeback attempt in the opener fell short, falling 8-6 before being blanked, 2-0 in the nightcap.
Game One Key Moments
- The Cougars struck first in the top of the opening frame as Noah Hurlock launched a solo home run to put IUK up 1-0.
- WVU Tech blasted a two-run shot in the home half of the first to move in front by a score of 2-1.
- The Golden Bears added four runs in the second inning to take a 6-1 lead.
- Pat Mills got a run back with a solo shot in the third.
- Two runs from the Golden Bears in the fifth made it an 8-2 game.
- Riley Garczynski drove in a pair of runs after Luke Hanson and Thomas Obergfell reached on consecutive errors by the Golden Bears. Hurlock added another run with an RBI-double to make it 8-5.
- Obergfell led off the Cougars' last at-bat with a double and would score on a Garczynski single. After a double play, Hurlock singled and gave way to pinch runner Bryce Lenz. Lenz eventually got to third after a Jared Heard single and a walk by Dylan Steele.
- The Cougars would leave the bases loaded to end the game.
Game One Pitching
- Owen Callaghan took the loss as the lefty gave up six runs on seven hits.
- Lucas Letsinger tossed four innings in relief and gave up two runs on four hits.
Game Two Key Moments
- The Golden Bears loaded the bases in the fourth inning, but IUK starter Ben Harris pitched out of the jam to keep the game scoreless.
- Harris got the WVU Tech leadoff hitter out to start the fifth but issues two straight free passes to put Golden Bears on first and second. Ethan Leslie came on in relief of Harris. WVU Tech managed to plate two runs in the inning.
- The IUK offense never got going, eventually falling 2-0.
Game Two Pitching
- Harris took the loss, throwing 4.1 innings, allowing two runs on two hits while striking out four.
- Leslie tossed 1.2 innings in relief without allowing a hit.
