KOKOMO, Ind. – The Indiana University Kokomo baseball team won both of games of Sunday's non-conference doubleheader with Miami (Hamilton) 11-6 and 6-4, respectively, to complete their third consecutive weekend series sweep of the season. The Cougars took the series opener over the Harriers Saturday afternoon 1-0.
The Cougars are now 16-8 on the year and 6-0 in River States Conference play.
Game One Recap (Saturday)
Senior
Owen Callaghan threw eight shutout innings, giving up four hits with six strikeouts and two walks.
The Cougars struck for the only run of the game in the seventh inning by way of small ball and walks.
Tucker Platt walked to begin the inning before advancing to second on a
Luke Hanson groundout. The next two batters each reached via bunt-singles, loading the bases for lead-off batter
Riley Garczynski with one out. Garczynski drew a bases-loaded walk to bring in the winning run, before the following two batters flew out.
Ethan Leslie closed out Miami (Hamilton) in order in the top of the ninth to earn his second save of the season.
Game Two Key Moments (Sunday Game One)
- Riley Garczynski walked to open the bottom of the first and would later come around to score on a Jared Heard groundout.
- Pat Mills reached after being hit by a pitch and later scored on a Tucker Platt RBI single.
- Mills went deep to right for his first of three home runs on the day to open the bottom of the third inning.
- Jared Heard walked later in the third, eventually coming around to score on a Jack Leverenz double. Leverenz stole third and scored on a Dylan Janke infield single, extending the Cougs lead to 5-0 after three innings.
- Heard came up with a 2 RBI double in the fourth to make it a 7-0 Cougar lead.
- The Cougs scored four times in the fifth inning, with Leverenz scoring on a passed ball before Pat Mills smacked a 2 RBI triple. Mills scored on a Noah Hurlock single to left field, extending the Cougs lead to 11-0 through five innings of play.
- The Harriers were able to score three runs on four hits in the sixth to cut the Cougar lead to 11-3 with one inning to play.
- Miami (Hamilton) scored three more times in the top of the seventh on three walks and one base hit.
Game Two Pitching
- JT Holton tossed six innings, giving up three runs on five hits. The freshman struck out seven with no walks.
- Brandon Clarke pitched the final inning.
Game Three Key Moments (Sunday Game Two)
- Matt Iacobucci and Luke Hanson had back-to-back singles in the bottom of the second. Iacobucci scored on a Bryce Lenz sac-fly before Hanson scored on a Riley Garczynski single down the right-field line.
- Pat Mills went yard to right field for his second of the day, scoring Garczynski and giving the Cougars a 4-0 lead through two innings.
- The Harriers scored once in the third to cut the Cougar lead to 4-1.
- Mills hit a solo shot to right field in the fifth to extend the Cougar lead to 5-1.
- Jack Leverenz tripled down the right-field line to open the bottom half of the sixth and would score on a Iacobucci single. The Cougs led 6-1 after six innings.
- Miami (Hamilton) gave the Cougars a bit of a scare in the seventh, scoring three runs on four hits. Ryan Beck came in for the final two outs, striking out the final two batters.
Game Three Pitching
- Lucas Letsinger went five innings giving up one run on four hits to earn the win and improve to 2-0. Letsinger struck out six and walked one.
- Junior Mark Goudy pitched a scoreless sixth.
- Mason Whitely began the seventh before Ryan Beck came in to record the final two outs for the save.
The Cougs are set to host Indiana Tech for a doubleheader Tuesday afternoon at Kokomo Municipal Stadium before a weekend series in downtown Kokomo with River States Conference foe Oakland City. First pitch for game one Tuesday is set for 4:00 p.m.
