KANSAS CITY, Mo. – The Indiana University Kokomo men's basketball team saw its historic season come to an end in the NAIA Men's Basketball National Championship Round of 16 on Friday night. The Cougars fell just short to fifth-seeded, Concordia (Neb.) at the Municipal Auditorium. IUK ends its season with a program best 32 wins.
Tayson Parker led the Cougars with a team-high 16 points on 6-of-11 shooting. Fifth-year senior
Trequan Spivey finished with 14 points while
Desean Hampton chipped in with 13.
IU Kokomo jumped out to an early 4-0 lead when
Hunter White and Hampton each converted a layup but a 5-0 run from the Bulldogs gave Concordia its first lead of the contest.
With the game even at eight, the Bulldogs used a 6-0 run to move in front but an 8-2 IU Kokomo run once again tied the game, this time at 16.
With 7:08 remaining in the opening frame, the Bulldogs hit 1-of-2 free throws to take their largest lead of the half at nine points. IU Kokomo battled back to make it a one possession game but a three at the buzzer sent Cougars into the break trailing 37-31. It was the 13th time of the season they faced a deficit after 20 minutes.
Tayson Parker led the offense, scoring 10 points on 4-of-6 shooting to go along with four rebounds. Hampton finished the half with seven points and three rebounds.
The Cougars shot just 39% from the floor in the opening half while the Bulldogs shot 46%. Concordia out-rebounded the Cougars 22-14.
Concordia pushed its lead to 11 points to start the second half, but the Cougars responded with a 10-0 run to get within a point at 44-43. A Bulldog triple ended their scoreless drought.
The IU Kokomo offense continued to struggle getting shots to fall and the Bulldogs never wavered over the final 12:55, punching their ticket to the Round of Eight.
