Baseball Earns Midweek Split With Aquinas

KOKOMO, Ind. – The Indiana University Kokomo baseball team split a doubleheader on Wednesday night against Aquinas College. The Cougars fell 5-0 in the opener before coming from behind to take the nightcap, 8-4. 
 
The Cougars improve to 13-8 on the season. 
 
Game One Key Moments
  • Dylan Steele recorded the Cougars first hit in the first inning with a single to left field. 
  • The Saints scattered three hits to score two runs in the top of the third to take a 2-0 lead. 
  • Aquinas tacked on three more in the fifth to extend their lead to 5-0. 
  • In their final at-bat the Cougars got two runners aboard after Noah Hurlock reached on a throwing error and Jack Leverenz singled. The next three batters went down in order to close out the game. 
Game One Pitching 
  • Ben Harris got the start for the Cougars and tossed three innings, allowing two runs on three hits. Harris took the loss. 
  • Owen Callaghan and Mark Goudy each tossed an inning in relief, neither allowed a hit. 
Game Two Key Moments
  • Riley Garczynski got things going with a single to right-center and would score when Pat Mills tripled in the gap. Mills scored on a Jared Heard single to give the Cougars an early 2-0 lead. 
  • Aquinas evened things at two in the second inning. 
  • The Saints used small ball in the fourth inning to plate two runs, taking a 4-2 lead over IUK. 
  • Seth Denoyer led off the Cougars' half of the fourth reaching in a hit by pitch. Goudy came on to pinch run for Denoyer and would move into scoring position on a sacrifice bunt by Tahj Borom. Garczynski ripped a shot back up the middle to score Goudy and bring IUK within a run of the Aquinas lead. 
  • Mason Whiteley came on in relief for the Cougars and pitched out of a bases loaded jam in the fifth. 
  • Matt Iacobucci led off the bottom of the fifth with a double. After Bryce Lenz came on to pinch run and moved up on a Jarod Gillespie sacrifice bunt, the Cougars left him stranded at third. 
  • Borom singled to start the sixth and stole second. Garczynski drove Borom in to tie the game at four. After Garczysnki stole second, Mills lifted a ball that just stayed in the park for a double, scoring Garczynski to give IUK the lead. Heard singled to score Mills to make it a 6-4 game. Luke Barnes and Denoyer each picked up RBI singles to make it 8-4. 
  • Ryan Beck made quick work of the Saints in their final at-bat to give the Cougars the split. 
Game Two Pitching
  • Lucas Letsinger got the start for the Cougars in the nightcap and allowed two runs on three hits. 
  • Garrison Brege, Connor Hurt, and Whiteley each threw an inning of relief. 
  • Beck earned the win to move to 1-1 on the season. Beck tossed two innings and allowed just one hit.

  • The Cougars will host Miami-Hamilton this weekend in a three-game series at Kokomo Municipal Stadium.
