Baseball Splits With Truett McConnell; Earns Series Victory

CLEVELAND, Ga. – The Indiana University Kokomo baseball team split a doubleheader at Truett McConnell on Saturday, winning the first game 7-1 and dropping the series finale, 11-3. The Cougars head back north with a 2-1 series win over the Bears. 

Game One Key Moments
  • IU Kokomo starting pitcher Ben Harris pitched out of a bases loaded jam in the bottom of the first inning to keep the game scoreless.
  • Luke Barnes singled and advanced to second on a Dylan Janke walk. The Cougars loaded the bases when Tucker Platt drew a walk. Sean Becker recorded a sacrifice fly, scoring Barnes to give the Cougars a 1-0 lead. 
  • Truett McConnell scored a run in the bottom of the fourth to tie the game.
  • IU Kokomo loaded the bases in the fifth when Patrick Mills and Noah Hurlock recorded back-to-back one-out singles. Dylan Steele drew a walk to load the bases but would get picked off for the second out of the inning. Barnes struck out, stranding two IU Kokomo baserunners in the inning. 
  • Ethan Leslie came on in relief in the fifth and retired the side in order. 
  • Leslie pitched out of a jam in the sixth, stranding two runners. 
  • The IU Kokomo offense exploded for six runs in the top of the seventh, all coming with two outs. Steele drove in two runs with a triple while Janke, Platt, Becker, and Thomas Obergfell each recorded RBI singles. 
  • The IUK defense turned a 6-4-3 double play to end the game and clinch the series. 
Game One Pitching
  • Harris earned his first win of the season, tossing four innings, allowing just one hit.
  • Leslie logged three innings in relief, allowing just two hits.
Game Two Key Moments
  • Truett McConnell plated nine runs in the bottom of the first inning.
  • The Bears added a run in the second and run in the third to extend their lead to 11-0 through three innings of play. 
  • Matt Iacobucci was responsible for the Cougars' three runs as he blasted his first homerun of the season to make it an 11-3 game in the sixth inning. 
  • Riley Garczynski, Tahj Borom, and Steele each recorded a hit in the loss. 
Game Two Pitching Up Next
 
The Cougars will have some time off before their season opener on February 25. IUK will play a split doubleheader with IU South Bend and Saint Francis (IN) at Kokomo Municipal Stadium.
