KOKOMO, Ind. – The Indiana University Kokomo baseball team played their first home games of the 2022 season on Monday afternoon as they hosted Calumet College of St. Joseph at Kokomo Municipal Stadium. The Cougars swept the doubleheader, winning the first game 5-2 before taking the nightcap, 5-1.
The IUK offense combined for 12 hits and 10 runs in the doubleheader while the pitching staff struck out 20 batters and issued just two walks.
Game One Key Moments
- After issuing a leadoff walk, IUK starter Ben Harris ended the top of the first with back-to-back strikeouts.
- Pat Mills doubled in his first at-bat and came around to score on a Dylan Steele single to give the Cougars a 1-0 lead after the first inning.
- Harris picked up three more strikeouts in the second frame.
- Steele started a two-out rally with his second single of the game in the third inning. Dylan Janke walked and both he and Steele would score on a CCSJ to give IUK a 3-0 lead.
- An IUK error and two hits by the Crimson Wave resulted in two runs in the fourth.
- Tahj Borom reached on a hit by pitch in the Cougars half of the fourth and scored on a Riley Garczynski single to make it a 4-2 game.
- Steele reached in the fifth on two errors by the third baseman. Tucker Platt picked up an RBI on a sacrifice fly, scoring Steele.
Game One Pitching
- Harris earned his second win of the season, throwing five innings, allowing two runs on three hits and striking out seven.
- Sam Hinshaw tossed an inning of relief, allowing just one hit.
- Mason Whiteley picked up his first save of the season, throwing a perfect seventh inning.
Game Two Key Moments
- JT Holton struck out the first three CCSJ batters he faced in the top of the first inning.
- Garczynski led the home half of the first off, reaching on an error by the CCSJ shortstop. Mills doubled to right field, scoring Garczynski to put the Cougars up 1-0. Matt Iacobucci tripled, scoring Mills to put IUK in front 2-0. Iacobucci came around to score on a Jarod Gillespie single to make it 3-0 after one inning.
- Bryce Lenz reached in the fourth after a CCSJ error and would move up 90 feet after a Gillespie single. After a double steal, Platt grounded out, scoring Lenz to make it a 4-0 game.
- A leadoff double came around to score for the Crimson Wave in the fifth inning.
- Steele scored from first on a Iacobucci double down the left field line to give the Cougars a 5-1 lead through five innings.
- Holton stranded two runners in the sixth to end his night.
Game Two Pitching
- Holton threw a gem for the Cougars. The freshman tossed six innings, allowing one run on six hits, and striking out 10.
- Ethan Leslie shut the door in the seventh inning, retiring the side in order while striking out one Crimson Wave hitter.
