Volleyball Closes Out Regular Season With Sweep of Midway on Senior Day

KOKOMO, Ind. - The IU Kokomo volleyball team dispatched Midway in three sets Saturday for the second time this season, this time to close out the regular season on the day in which the 2023 senior class was celebrated. The Cougars finished the regular season with a record of 27-6 and a 16-2 RSC mark.

IU Kokomo and head coach Heather Hayes honored three seniors, Lorelei Porter, Sidney Gerig, and Cassie Batic, Saturday for their commitment to the Cougar volleyball program over the years.

Today's match was moved to Cougar Gym in downtown Kokomo due to a power outage on the campus of IUK. The IU Kokomo faithful packed the stands, making for a rowdy senior day environment.

The Cougars won the first four points of the match in what turned out to be a dominant first set performance. A Lorelei Porter kill extended the IUK lead to 10-3, forcing Midway to call a timeout. IU Kokomo led 17-7 before closing out the set on an 8-0 run.

IUK led 4-3 early in the second set before winning six-straight points and forcing a Midway timeout while leading 10-3. The Eagles trimmed the lead to five at 12-7 but that was as close as they got for the remainder of the set. The Cougars eventually won the second set 25-15 for a two-set lead.

The third set was much tighter than the previous two early on, as the Cougars led 13-9 at the midway point of the set. IUK won three consecutive points for a 19-14 lead thanks to two Lexi Broyles kills and a block from the duo of Broyles and Tori Wilkinson.

IU Kokomo led by three at 19-16, before winning six of the final seven points of the match. The Cougars won the third set 25-17 and the match 3-0 over Midway.

Lexi Broyles paced the Cougs offensively with ten kills while Lorelei Porter had eight.

Alyvia Smith had a match-high in digs with 17 while Kaley Lyons had a match-high 17 assists. Allison Richman tallied 14 assists.

The Cougars will begin postseason play next Friday, November 11th, with a quarterfinal matchup in the RSC Volleyball Championships against IU Southeast. The Cougars and Grenadiers will play at 12:00 PM. The tournament will be hosted by Point Park in Pittsburgh.
