MIDWAY, Ky. – The Indiana University Kokomo women's basketball team lost at Midway Tuesday evening 65-54. The Cougars led after a quarter, but the Eagles distanced themselves with strong play in the second and third quarters.
Sophomore guard
Anya Friend led all scorers Tuesday with 20 points while playing 38 minutes. Freshman Mia Catey had an impressive game off of the bench with nine points and eight rebounds.
Anna Kiser and
Kristen Ridner contributed seven points apiece.
Midway took a 2-0 lead on their second possession of the game, but IU Kokomo scored the next nine points for a seven-point lead. A Mia Catey layup gave the Cougars their largest lead of the night of nine points with 1:11 remaining in the first quarter. The Eagles scored the final five-points of the quarter, but IUK led 17-13 after one.
The Eagles quickly regained the lead early in the second quarter, but the Cougars answered right back for a two-point lead of their own. Midway outscored IU Kokomo 7-0 in the final 3:15 of the first half and led 28-23 at the half.
Early in the third, Mia Catey drilled a triple to trim the Midway lead to a point, but that was as close as the Cougars got. Ella Wolfe scored in the paint to cut the Eagles lead back down to three with 3:30 remaining in the third quarter, but Midway scored the final 11 points of the quarter to lead 50-36 heading to the fourth.
IU Kokomo managed to get within nine points on multiple occasions in the fourth quarter, but were unable to close the gap any more. Midway went on to beat IUK 65-54.
The Cougars will return to the hardwood Saturday afternoon for their second home game of the season. IU Kokomo will host IU Southeast for a 1:00 P.M. tip-off.
